A promenade, a church and the evening paseo
The heart of Nerja is the Balcón de Europa, a palm-lined walkway on the site of an old clifftop fort. Local legend says Alfonso XII gave it the name on a visit in 1885, and his bronze statue now stands at the railings. The church of El Salvador is right beside it, and the lanes behind are full of tapas bars.
Below the Balcón are small coves such as Calahonda. A short walk east, Burriana is the town's longest and liveliest beach, where paella is cooked over wood fires at lunchtime. Apartments and villas near here mean you can do without a car.

Caves, coves and a protected coastline
Just east of town are the Nerja Caves, found by five local boys in 1959. They hold Palaeolithic paintings and one of the largest columns of rock in the world, and every July the Cueva de Nerja festival puts concerts and dance in a natural amphitheatre deep inside.
Beyond them, the little village of Maro looks down on a sheltered beach. From here the Acantilados de Maro-Cerro Gordo, a protected stretch of cliffs, run towards Granada province, and kayaking past the waterfalls and old watchtowers is the best way to see them. Look out for the brick Puente del Águila aqueduct on the way.

Frigiliana, the Chillar and the sierra
Frigiliana is a steep, whitewashed village of Moorish origin a few kilometres inland, with tiled lanes and a terrace for lunch on every corner. In late August it holds the Festival of the Three Cultures, which celebrates its Christian, Muslim and Jewish past.
Nerja also sits on the edge of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park. The classic walk heads up the Río Chillar, wading upstream through a narrow gorge, which is a cool summer outing if you check the weather first. Espetos, ajoblanco and an October feria
The thing to order on the beach is espetos: sardines threaded on canes and grilled over embers in an old boat filled with sand. Ajoblanco, the cold almond and garlic soup of Málaga, is the dish for hot days, and the Axarquía's mango and avocado orchards and sweet Moscatel wines fill out the table.
May, June, September and October are the most comfortable months. July and August bring heat, crowds and the Virgen del Carmen procession on 16 July.
