Nueva Andalucía is the green, gently rising valley directly behind Puerto Banús. Locals call it the Golf Valley, and you can see why: Las Brisas, Aloha, Los Naranjos and La Quinta fill most of the open ground, with the Sierra Blanca behind them and the Mediterranean in front. It is Marbella's largest residential district, laid out with wide avenues, mature gardens and a good deal more calm than the port below.

Four clubs, one valley
Few places in Europe pack so much golf into so little ground. Las Brisas and Los Naranjos were both laid out by Robert Trent Jones Senior, and Los Naranjos is often counted among his finest European courses. Aloha, built in the 1970s, is a members' favourite. La Quinta sits on the higher slopes, with long views to the sea.
Many of our villas look straight out over a fairway, so the morning round starts a short buggy ride from the breakfast table. Non-golfers get the green outlook and the quiet. The golf courses also keep building at bay, which is why the valley has stayed so leafy.

Saturday mornings, sorted
The bullring at the bottom of the valley went up in 1965 and was one of the first buildings here. It no longer hosts bullfights. Today it is the Marbella Arena, a concert and events venue, and in 2009 it staged a Davis Cup tie.
Every Saturday morning a street market spreads from the bullring up to Centro Plaza. Expect antiques, rugs, flowers, fruit, leather goods and a fair amount of cheerful nonsense. Go early, before the heat and the crowds, then have a long coffee in one of the cafés around the plaza. It is the nearest thing Nueva Andalucía has to a village square.

The port below, the old town beyond
From the lower part of the valley you can walk down to Puerto Banús, with its superyachts, designer boutiques and late-night bars, then retreat uphill when you have had enough. The beaches of Puerto Banús and San Pedro de Alcántara are a few minutes' drive away.
Marbella's old town, with its whitewashed lanes and orange trees around the Plaza de los Naranjos, is a short drive east. Head west along the coast and you reach the hill villages of Casares and, in the other direction, Mijas. Ronda and its gorge are around an hour inland on the mountain road, which is a good day out if you can tear yourself away from the pool.

The local classic is espetos: sardines threaded on a cane and grilled over an open fire on the sand, best eaten at a chiringuito with a cold beer. On hot days, look out for ajoblanco, Málaga's chilled almond and garlic soup. The valley itself has a lively mix of international restaurants, and the clubhouse terraces are good for a slow lunch.
