Villas with private pools in the pine hills above the Blue Lagoon, beneath the paragliders of Babadağ
As featured in
Ölüdeniz means 'dead sea' in Turkish, after the lagoon's glassy calm, which is a rather gloomy name for so cheerful a place. A long curve of pebble and sand runs beneath pine-covered cliffs, the protected Blue Lagoon sits sheltered at its western end, and Babadağ rises almost two thousand metres straight up behind it. On most days in season, paragliders drift down from the summit and land on the beach.
Our Ölüdeniz collection runs to 44 villas, mostly family houses of three to six bedrooms with private pools, set in the villages and hillsides of Ovacık and Hisarönü and the quieter valleys between the beach and Fethiye.
Here is how the area fits together, what to do once the pool has worked its spell, and when to come.

Villa Tatil | 4-Bedroom Villa with Private Pool in Ovacik Oludeniz4 bedroomsOvacık for the quieter hillside and the start of the Lycian Way, Hisarönü for restaurants within a stroll, the valleys towards Kayaköy for peace, and Fethiye for its harbour and markets.

The main beach, Belceğiz, sweeps along the bay with a promenade of cafés and restaurants behind it, and the paragliders come in to land at its western end. Beyond lies the Blue Lagoon itself, a protected stretch of shallow, sheltered water held behind a sandy spit, where small children can paddle in water as calm as a bath.
Come early in summer, when the lagoon is at its stillest and before the day-trippers arrive from Fethiye. From the hills above, the view down to the water is one most visitors photograph on their first evening, and again on their last.

Most of our villas sit in the hills behind the bay, a short drive above the beach. Hisarönü is the livelier of the two main villages, with plenty of restaurants and bars, while Ovacık is quieter, with the road up Babadağ climbing out of it. Both are around ten minutes from the sand.
Over the next ridge lies Kayaköy, a hillside of hundreds of roofless stone houses left empty when its Greek inhabitants departed in the 1923 population exchange. It inspired Louis de Bernières' novel Birds Without Wings, and a late-afternoon wander among its chapels and lanes, followed by dinner in the valley below, is one of the best evenings in the area.
Explore Fethiye

A cable car now climbs Babadağ, which makes the tandem paragliding flight down to the beach far easier to arrange than it once was, and the views from the top are worth the ride even if you would rather keep your feet on the ground.
The Lycian Way, a long-distance footpath of more than 500 kilometres along the ancient Lycian coast, begins at Ovacık, and its first stage descends gently to Kayaköy. By sea, boats from the beach run to Butterfly Valley, a steep-sided gorge reachable only by water or a hard scramble, and to Gemiler Island with its Byzantine ruins.
Explore the Muğla coast
Lunch here tends towards gözleme, thin folded flatbreads cooked on a griddle by women in village kitchens, while dinner means a spread of meze and fish grilled over charcoal. Fethiye's Tuesday market is the place to stock the villa with figs, olives, cheese and spices.
The season runs from May to October, and the sea is at its warmest in late summer. July and August are hot and busy, so June and September suit those who want warm water with fewer people. The Ölüdeniz Air Games, a paragliding festival, fills the sky each autumn. Our concierge can arrange boat days, paragliding flights, a private chef and transfers.
