Villas with private pools above turquoise bays, from Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy to Bodrum and the Bozburun peninsula
As featured in
Muğla is the province in Turkey's south-west corner, and it has more coastline than almost anywhere else in the country. It starts with the whitewashed peninsula of Bodrum on the Aegean, runs past the pine-covered inlets of Marmaris and Bozburun, and ends in the mountains around Fethiye, where the old land of Lycia begins. Along the way you find rock-cut tombs, a ghost village, a lagoon so still it is called the Dead Sea, and a great many good fish restaurants.
Our Muğla collection runs to 150+ villas. They range from stone houses in the valley at Kayaköy and family villas above Ölüdeniz to contemporary homes on the Bodrum peninsula and quiet places near the water at Selimiye and Orhaniye. Nearly all have private pools, and the largest sleep 20 guests.
Here is how the province divides up, and how to pick the right corner of it.

Villa Marin Hill Turkey8 bedroomsFethiye, Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy for lagoons, mountains and the Lycian Way, Bodrum and Yalıkavak for a lively, sophisticated Aegean coast, Dalyan for the river and turtle beach, and Marmaris and Bozburun for quiet bays.

Fethiye is a working harbour town built over ancient Telmessos. The Tomb of Amyntas is cut into the cliff above it, and the weekly Tuesday market is worth planning a morning around. Day boats go out from the harbour to the islands of the gulf.
Ölüdeniz, over the hill, has the famous lagoon and long pebble beach. Paragliders launch from Babadağ, almost 2,000 metres above it, and the Lycian Way, Turkey's best-known long-distance walk, starts close by. Kayaköy lies in a quiet valley between the two. Its hillside of abandoned stone houses was a Greek village until the 1920s, and the villas around it are some of the most peaceful in the province.

The Bodrum peninsula is the Aegean side of Muğla, and the most cosmopolitan. Bodrum town is built around the Castle of St Peter, put up by the Knights Hospitaller in the fifteenth century, which now houses the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. Little is left of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world, but you can still visit the site.
Each bay on the peninsula has its own character. Yalıkavak has a polished marina and good restaurants, while Gümüşlük is known for fish suppers at the water's edge, looking out over a sunken ancient town.

At Dalyan, river boats wind through the reed beds below the rock-cut tombs of Kaunos and down to İztuzu, a long sandy beach where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. It is a protected beach, and it closes at night during the nesting season.
East of Marmaris, the Bozburun peninsula is the place for unhurried days. Selimiye is a small fishing village on a sheltered bay, and at Orhaniye a narrow sandbar called Kızkumu runs far out into the sea, so you seem to be walking on water. This is gulet country, and a day aboard a wooden boat is the best way to see it.

Most evenings start with meze: smoked aubergine, wild greens dressed in olive oil, and fresh cheese. Then comes whatever fish came in that morning. In the villages, women roll gözleme by hand, and the pine forests around Marmaris produce a dark honey that is famous across Turkey.
The sea is warm enough for swimming from May to October, and it is at its warmest in September. High summer is hot, so spring and autumn are better for the Lycian Way and the ancient sites. Our concierge can arrange gulet days, paragliding, restaurant tables and transfers from either airport.

Gulet and boat days, paragliding from Babadağ, guides for the Lycian Way and Kaunos, restaurant reservations, car hire and transfers from Dalaman and Bodrum. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Ölüdeniz and Kayaköy suit families and walkers who want mountains and the lagoon close by. Bodrum and Yalıkavak are for restaurants, marinas and a livelier scene. Dalyan and the Bozburun peninsula are quieter and slower.
Dalaman is the closest airport for Fethiye, Ölüdeniz, Dalyan and Marmaris. Milas-Bodrum airport serves the Bodrum peninsula. Flights from the UK take around four hours, and our concierge can arrange private transfers.
