Farmhouses and country villas in the hills of eastern Tuscany, from Cortona and the Val di Chiana to the edge of Chianti
As featured in
Arezzo is the Tuscan city that most visitors to Florence and Siena pass on the motorway, which is very much their loss. It was one of the great Etruscan cities, it gave the world Petrarch and Giorgio Vasari, and its Basilica of San Francesco holds Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross, one of the finest fresco cycles of the Renaissance. The province around it runs from the olive terraces of Cortona to the beech forests of the Casentino.
Our Arezzo collection runs to 140+ properties, mostly stone farmhouses and country villas, many with private pools, spread through the hills around Cortona, Lucignano and Bucine, with a handful of apartments and smaller houses closer to the city. The largest has 16 bedrooms, enough for three generations and a few friends besides.
Here is how the province divides, what is worth the drive and when to come.

Start at San Francesco, where Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross fills the walls of the main chapel. Visits are timed, so it is worth booking ahead. From there, the streets climb to Piazza Grande, the steep, oddly shaped square framed by Vasari's loggia, which film lovers will recognise from Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful.
On the first Sunday of every month and the Saturday before, the Fiera Antiquaria takes over the centre. It has run since 1968, and hundreds of dealers spread through Piazza Grande, Piazza San Francesco and the side streets, selling everything from walnut dressers to old prints. Come early on the Saturday, before the crowds arrive.

Cortona sits high on its ridge, with Etruscan foundations under its walls and a view that reaches across the Val di Chiana to Lake Trasimeno. The Museo Diocesano has Fra Angelico's Annunciation, and the town became famous in Britain and America through Frances Mayes's Under the Tuscan Sun. Our villas around it range from modest farmhouses to much larger houses on the slopes below.
Down in the valley, Lucignano is worth a morning for its oval street plan, which coils around the hilltop. Montepulciano is close enough for a long lunch and a few bottles of Vino Nobile.

East of the city, the upper Tiber valley is Piero della Francesca country. His Resurrection hangs in the Museo Civico of Sansepolcro, the town where he was born, and his Madonna del Parto is in a small museum at Monterchi. Anghiari, on its hill above the plain where Florence and Milan fought their battle in 1440, is one of the best-kept small towns in Tuscany. Michelangelo was born nearby, at the village now called Caprese Michelangelo.
To the north, the Casentino is wooded and cool, with the castle at Poppi, the monastery of Camaldoli and the sanctuary of La Verna, where St Francis received the stigmata.

The Val di Chiana gives its name to the Chianina, the white cattle behind a proper bistecca, and Arezzo's own dishes include grifi all'aretina, a slow-cooked veal stew, and pappardelle with hare. Around Cortona, Syrah has become the local speciality, which still surprises visitors who expect only Sangiovese.
May, June, September and October are the kindest months, and high summer can be very hot in the valley. The Giostra del Saracino fills Piazza Grande on an evening in late June and again on the first Sunday of September. Our concierge can arrange joust seats, a guide for the Piero frescoes, wine tastings and a private chef.

Cortona and the Val di Chiana suit most visitors, with hill towns, good restaurants and Montepulciano within easy reach. The countryside around Arezzo is best for the city and its art, and Bucine, on the western side, puts Chianti and Siena close by.
May, June, September and October offer warm days without the heat of high summer. Time a visit for the first weekend of a month and you can add the Fiera Antiquaria, Arezzo's monthly antiques fair.
Arezzo's medieval joust is held in Piazza Grande twice a year: on the penultimate Saturday of June, in the evening, and on the first Sunday of September. Grandstand seats sell out, so it is worth booking early.
