Sarteano sits at 573 metres on the flank of Monte Cetona in the province of Siena, with the Val di Chiana spread out below it on one side and the Val d'Orcia on the other. It is a working Tuscan town rather than a showpiece. A castle crowns the hill, there is a nineteenth-century theatre on the main piazza, and just outside the walls lies one of the great Etruscan discoveries of recent decades. Montepulciano and Pienza get most of the coach parties, and Sarteano is rather glad of it.

A fortress, a theatre and a spring at 24 degrees
The castle above Sarteano dates back to the eleventh century, though most of what stands today was rebuilt in the fifteenth. Climb it for the view across the Val di Chiana towards Monte Cetona. Below it, the old town falls away in lanes of honey-coloured stone to Piazza XXIV Giugno, where the restored Teatro degli Arrischianti still puts on plays and concerts.
Sarteano also has springs. The water of the old Bagno Santo, which locals once believed healed tired eyes, rises at a steady 24°C or so and now feeds a set of public pools on the edge of town. It makes a bracing swim on a hot August afternoon.

A demon, a chariot and a Saturday appointment
In October 2003, archaeologists digging in the Pianacce necropolis just outside town found a painted tomb in remarkable condition. They named it the Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga, after the chariot pulled by two lions and two griffins and driven by a red-haired underworld demon, probably Charun. It dates from the fourth century BC.
You can visit the tomb itself on Saturdays, but only by booking ahead with the Museo Civico Archeologico. The museum, set in a Renaissance palazzo, has a life-size reconstruction for anyone who misses the slot. Chiusi, one of the great Etruscan cities, is a short drive east, and Cortona and Orvieto are both close enough for a day out.

Beech woods, high hamlets and the Val d'Orcia
Castiglioncello del Trinoro is a hamlet of a handful of residents, about six kilometres from Sarteano at 786 metres. It sits on a ridge looking straight out over the Val d'Orcia, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004. Nearby, the Pietraporciana Nature Reserve shelters a beech wood growing at an unusually low altitude, and good waymarked walks cross it.
Monte Cetona has trails up to its summit cross. Montepulciano, with its wine cellars cut into the rock, and Pienza, the Renaissance town planned for Pope Pius II, are both an easy drive for lunch.

Pici, Vino Nobile and a mid-August joust
This is a part of Tuscany that eats well and without fuss. Look for hand-rolled pici with garlic and tomato, Chianina beef from the Val di Chiana, pecorino from Pienza and the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano. On the evening of 15 August, Sarteano's five contrade compete in the Giostra del Saracino, a horseback joust of medieval origin that follows an afternoon parade in period costume. Book well ahead if you want to be here for it.
