Villas in Puerto del Carmen

A fishing harbour that became Lanzarote's favourite resort

Puerto del Carmen began as a fishing village called La Tiñosa, and its old harbour still has boats tied up a few steps from the seafood restaurants. Lanzarote's main resort has grown up around it, a long, easy-going run of golden beaches on the island's south-east coast. The volcanic interior is a short drive inland, and the winter sunshine has made the town a fixture for British travellers getting away from a grey January.

Our collection here runs to 47 villas. Most are in the quiet residential hills above town and around Tías, many built in the island's low, whitewashed style, with terraces facing the Atlantic and, in many cases, a private pool. They range from two-bedroom villas for couples to family houses with up to 6 bedrooms.

This guide covers the town, the island beyond it and when to come.

Where to stay in Puerto del Carmen

The old harbour and Playa Grande for restaurants and the beach, the hills of Tías for quiet villas with sea views, and Puerto Calero for its marina and boat trips.

The Town

An old harbour and several kilometres of sand

The old town, around the harbour at the western end, is the most attractive part of Puerto del Carmen. It has a small quay, a few fishing boats and a row of terraces where grilled fish and a cold glass of local white are what everyone orders. Playa Chica, a little cove close by, is a favourite with snorkellers and divers.

From here the Avenida de las Playas runs east for several kilometres past Playa Grande, Los Pocillos and Matagorda. Its promenade is good for a morning run and better for an evening stroll. The beaches are sandy, and the sea along this stretch is generally calmer than on the island's exposed north coast.

Tías & Puerto Calero

Quiet hills above the sea, and a marina next door

Many of our villas sit in the hills behind the resort, in the municipality of Tías, which Puerto del Carmen belongs to. Up here the evenings are quiet and the views run out over the Atlantic towards Fuerteventura. Tías itself is a small working town. The Nobel laureate José Saramago spent the last part of his life there, and his house, A Casa, is open to visitors.

A few minutes west, Puerto Calero is a smart marina with restaurants along the quay and boats for sailing, fishing and dolphin watching. A coastal path links it with the old town of Puerto del Carmen.

The Island

Fire mountains, vineyards and César Manrique

Lanzarote is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and its landscapes look like nowhere else in Europe. Timanfaya National Park, around half an hour's drive away, covers the lava fields left by the eruptions of the 1730s. At El Diablo restaurant, food is grilled over the heat of the volcano itself.

Closer still is La Geria, where vines grow in hollows dug into black volcanic ash, each one sheltered by a low stone wall, and the bodegas pour the island's malvasía. The artist César Manrique shaped much of what visitors love here, from the Jameos del Agua, built into a lava tube, to the Mirador del Río, which looks across to La Graciosa. On a Sunday, the market at Teguise is worth the drive.

Food & the Seasons

Wrinkled potatoes and winter sunshine

Canarian cooking is simple and good. Look out for papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salted water and served with red and green mojo, along with fresh fish such as vieja, goat's cheese and gofio, the toasted grain that has fed the islands for centuries. A dry malvasía from La Geria goes with all of it.

Puerto del Carmen works all year. Winter brings warm days while Britain shivers, spring and autumn suit walking and cycling, and the trade winds take the edge off the summer heat. The Ironman triathlon usually starts from Playa Grande in May, so book early if you want to be here that week. Our concierge can arrange boat trips, diving, wine tastings, harbour tables and transfers.
