Lanzarote is an island made by lava and then tidied up by an artist. Between 1730 and 1736 a chain of eruptions buried villages and farmland across the south west, leaving the Fire Mountains of Timanfaya. Two centuries later César Manrique persuaded his island to build low and white, and in 1993 UNESCO declared the whole of Lanzarote a Biosphere Reserve.

Sand, a fishing harbour and a novelist's town
Puerto del Carmen is the island's main resort and its most sociable base. It has a long promenade, golden beaches such as Playa Grande and Playa Chica, and an old harbour where the fish restaurants set their tables almost on the quay. The clear water off Playa Chica draws divers and snorkellers.
Tías sits just above it on the slopes. It is a working town with quieter streets and wide views down to the sea. José Saramago, the Nobel laureate, lived here from 1993 until his death, and his house and library are open to visitors. A villa on the hillside between the two gives you quiet evenings with the beach a short drive away.

A small marina with good manners
A few kilometres west of Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero is a purpose-built marina of low white buildings, yachts and waterside restaurants. Of the south coast bases it is the quietest and the most polished. Catamaran cruises, sport fishing and dolphin-watching trips all leave from its pontoons.
A coastal path runs over the lava between Puerto Calero and Puerto del Carmen, with the sea beside you all the way, and it makes a pleasant walk to lunch. Villas here suit couples and families who want peace and quiet with restaurants still close by.

Pale coves and the Fire Mountains
In the far south, Playa Blanca looks across a narrow strait to Fuerteventura, and the ferry to Corralejo takes around 25 to 35 minutes. East of the town, the Papagayo beaches are a string of sheltered coves of pale sand inside a protected natural area, reached along a dirt track.
North of Yaiza lies Timanfaya National Park, the landscape left by the eruptions of 1730 to 1736. Coach tours wind through the Fire Mountains, rangers pour water into the ground and it comes back up as a burst of steam, and the El Diablo restaurant grills over the volcano's heat. On the coast nearby, the green lagoon at El Golfo is worth the detour.

Lava caves, malvasía and sun in January
César Manrique was the island's artist and also its conscience, and he shaped much of what visitors see today. His works include the Jameos del Agua, a concert hall and pool built into a lava tube, the Mirador del Río lookout in the north and the Cactus Garden at Guatiza. In La Geria, vines grow in hollows dug into black volcanic ash, each one sheltered by a curved stone wall. Their malvasía volcánica goes well with grilled fish, papas arrugadas and mojo.

Who was César Manrique?
César Manrique was an artist and architect born on Lanzarote, and he argued that the island should build in harmony with its landscape. His work is all over the island, from the Jameos del Agua and the Mirador del Río to his former home at Tahíche, which is now the César Manrique Foundation. The airport is named after him.
