Villas in Las Palmas

Three eastern islands, one reliable sun

Las Palmas is the eastern of the two Canary Island provinces, and it takes in three very different islands. Lanzarote is black lava, white houses and the work of César Manrique. Gran Canaria is a small continent of dunes, pine forest and a lively capital. Fuerteventura is all wind, sand and long empty beaches. They share a climate that makes January feel like an English June, and a flight from the UK of around four hours.

Our collection here runs to 300+ villas, most of them on Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. Expect low whitewashed villas with private pools around Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero and Playa Blanca, sea-view apartments with pools, and larger houses of up to 12 bedrooms for families travelling together.

What follows is a short guide to each island, the season and how to choose between them.

Where to stay in Las Palmas

Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero for restaurants and the marina, Yaiza and Playa Blanca for the Papagayo beaches, Mogán for the sunny south-west of Gran Canaria, and La Oliva for the dunes of Corralejo.

Lanzarote

Volcanoes, vines and one artist's vision

Lanzarote looks the way it does largely because of César Manrique, the local artist who argued against high-rise building and left behind the Jameos del Agua, a concert hall and pool set inside a lava tube, and the Mirador del Río, a lookout across the strait to La Graciosa. The island has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1993.

In the south, the fire mountains of Timanfaya National Park rise above Yaiza, and the vines of La Geria grow in black ash hollows behind low stone walls. Puerto del Carmen is the liveliest base, Puerto Calero the smartest, and Playa Blanca the closest to the pale sandy coves of Papagayo.

Gran Canaria

A capital, a desert and a mountain interior

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the city that gives the province its name, is a proper Atlantic port with a long town beach at Las Canteras and an old quarter, Vegueta, where Columbus is said to have stopped on his way west. The Casa de Colón museum tells that story.

The south is where most visitors stay, around the dunes of Maspalomas and the little harbour of Puerto de Mogán, laced with canals and bougainvillea. Inland, roads climb through pine forest to Roque Nublo and to Risco Caído, whose cave sites and sacred mountains were added to UNESCO's World Heritage list in 2019.

Fuerteventura

Wind, sand and a great deal of space

Fuerteventura has the longest beaches in the Canaries and the fewest people per mile of them. In the north, around Corralejo in La Oliva, sand dunes run down to turquoise water inside a protected natural park, and boats cross to the tiny island of Lobos for a morning's swimming and walking.

The steady trade winds make this one of Europe's great places for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Inland, the old capital of Betancuria sits quietly in a valley, and the island is also known for majorero, its prized goat's cheese. Ferries link Corralejo with Playa Blanca on Lanzarote in well under an hour.

Food & the Seasons

Wrinkled potatoes, malvasía and a sun that keeps going

Canarian cooking is simple and very good: papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salted water and served with red and green mojo sauces, grilled fresh fish, goat's cheese and gofio, a toasted grain flour that turns up in everything. On Lanzarote, try the dry malvasía volcánica from the bodegas of La Geria.

The islands are warm all year, which makes them a favourite winter sun choice. Spring and autumn suit walkers, and summer brings the calmest seas. Carnival in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, usually in February, is one of the biggest in Spain. Our concierge can arrange wine visits, boat trips, ferry crossings, car hire and transfers.

Why book your Las Palmas villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Las Palmas spans three islands with very different characters, and we know which villas sit within a walk of a beach, which are close to the marina restaurants, and which island suits your family best. With 300+ properties in Las Palmas, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Bodega visits in La Geria, boat trips to Lobos and Papagayo, ferry tickets between islands, windsurfing and kitesurfing lessons, car hire and airport transfers. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
