Sea-view villas in the pine hills of southwest Ibiza, between Sa Talaia and the coves facing Es Vedrà
As featured in
San José, or Sant Josep de sa Talaia to give it its proper Ibizan name, is the quieter, greener side of an island better known for its nights. The village sits inland in the southwest, below the highest hill on Ibiza. The coast around it is a run of coves, cliffs and pine-covered headlands, with the rock of Es Vedrà standing out at sea.
Our San José collection runs to 35 villas in the hills between the village and the coves of the west and south coasts. Most have private pools and many look out to sea. They range from family villas to houses big enough for several generations at once.
Here is a guide to the village, its coast and the best time to come.

Sant Josep is the seat of the largest municipality on Ibiza, but the village itself is small. It has a white church with a three-arched porch, a square with a few cafés, and a handful of shops and galleries. The church dates from the eighteenth century, and inside is a carved wooden Baroque altar.
Behind it rises Sa Talaia, the highest point on the island at 475 metres. A walking route starts in the church square and passes the Can Jeroni cultural centre. It then climbs gently through pine woods and terraced fields to viewpoints over much of Ibiza and across to Formentera. Go on a clear morning, and take water.

West of the village, the land falls away through pine and juniper to a string of small coves. Cala Carbó is a narrow inlet with a couple of beach restaurants. Cala Vedella is a sheltered bay that suits children. Cala d'Hort looks straight out at Es Vedrà, the rock that rises sheer from the sea and has gathered more stories than anywhere else on the island.
Walk up to Torre des Savinar, an old watchtower on the cliffs, for the classic view of the islet at sunset. That view is why a west-facing terrace is so prized in these hills.

To the south, the road winds down to Es Cubells, a hamlet with a whitewashed church on the clifftop. Beyond it lies Cala Jondal, where lunch at the beach clubs tends to be long and sociable. Further east is the Ses Salines natural park, with its salt pans, flamingos in season and the long sandy beaches of Ses Salines and Es Cavallet.
On the headland at Sa Caleta are the remains of a Phoenician settlement founded in the seventh century BC, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a short, rewarding detour on the way back from the beach.

Ibizan cooking is country food. Try bullit de peix, fish stewed with potatoes and followed by rice cooked in the broth, or sofrit pagès, a rich meat dish for cooler evenings. For pudding there is flaó, a cheesecake scented with mint. A small glass of hierbas, the island's herb liqueur, ends the meal.
The season runs from May to October. June and September are the best months, with a warm sea, fewer people and easier tables. The village celebrates its patron saint, Saint Joseph, on 19 March. Our concierge can book beach club tables, boat days and a private chef.
