West Soho around Carnaby Street and Golden Square for shopping and slightly calmer streets, central Soho around Dean and Frith Streets for restaurants and nightlife, with Fitzrovia, Mayfair and Covent Garden all within a few minutes' walk.
Carnaby Street, Liberty and Golden Square
The western side of Soho is the more composed half. Carnaby Street, famous for sixties fashion, is now a pedestrian run of independent shops and restaurants, with Kingly Court tucked behind it. At the top stands Liberty, the Tudor revival department store on Great Marlborough Street, which is worth a visit just to see the building.
Golden Square, a short walk south, is a calm Georgian square of offices and plane trees. It suits guests who want Soho on the doorstep without people heading home from the bars under the window at two in the morning.

Mozart, Marx and a famous water pump
Few square miles hold this much history. The young Mozart lived on Frith Street in 1764, Karl Marx lived on Dean Street in the 1850s, and on Broadwick Street a replica pump recalls John Snow, who traced the 1854 cholera outbreak to the water there.
The twentieth century brought jazz, film and late nights. Ronnie Scott's has been running since 1959 and is still the place to hear jazz in London. Bar Italia on Frith Street has been pouring espresso since 1949, and for most of the day and night it is still open.

Mayfair, Fitzrovia and Covent Garden
Soho's real advantage is where it sits. Cross Regent Street and you are in Mayfair, with Savile Row and the galleries of Cork Street. North of Oxford Street, Fitzrovia is quieter, with good restaurants on Charlotte Street. Head east past Cambridge Circus and Covent Garden and the Royal Opera House are ten minutes away on foot. The National Gallery on Trafalgar Square is hardly further.
Plenty of guests hardly use a taxi all week, and in this part of London that is the point.
Dim sum, pastries and Christmas lights
Soho eats well at every price. Dim sum in Chinatown, pastries at Maison Bertaux on Greek Street, which has been baking since 1871, fruit and street food on Berwick Street, and a long list of serious restaurants on Dean Street. Some of the best places do not take bookings, so expect to queue.
Chinese New Year fills Chinatown with lanterns and lion dances in January or February. From November the Christmas lights go up on Regent Street and Carnaby Street. Spring and early autumn are the easiest months for walking. Our concierge can book theatre seats, tables and transfers.
