Villas with private pools above the bay, in the shadow of the great rock of Ifach
As featured in
Calpe is built around the Peñón de Ifach, a limestone rock of around 330 metres joined to the shore by a narrow neck of land. It is a natural park and the best-known landmark on the Costa Blanca. On one side of the rock is Arenal-Bol beach. On the other is La Fossa beach, with the fishing port at its foot. Behind them, flamingos wade in an old salt lagoon right in the middle of town.
Our collection runs to 220+ villas around Calpe. They range from modern houses with sea views on the hills above the bay to family villas with gardens, and they reach north along the Benissa coast to Moraira. Almost all have private pools.
Below is our guide to where to stay, what to do and when to come.

The path up the Peñón de Ifach is about five kilometres there and back. It passes through a tunnel cut into the rock and ends at the summit, with views to Ibiza on a clear day. The stretch beyond the tunnel is steep and rocky, so wear proper shoes and start early in summer.
Down below, the Salinas lagoon draws flamingos and herons, and a trail runs round it. By the sea are the Baños de la Reina, the remains of Roman fish ponds cut into the rock. On weekday afternoons the trawlers come home and the catch is sold at the Lonja, the fish market, where visitors can watch the auction from a gallery. The old town on the hill is quieter, with the medieval Torreó de la Peça and narrow lanes.

North of Calpe the high-rise seafront gives way to low hills of pine and villas. The Benissa coast is a run of small rocky coves, and a walking path follows the shore. Many of our villas are here, set back from the sea but within easy reach of it.
Further on, Moraira is a small harbour town with a fortress by the beach and a good Friday market. Benitachell climbs up to the Cumbre del Sol headland, high above Cala Moraig, a pebble cove with a sea cave beside it. This end of the coast suits anyone who wants long, quiet days, with Calpe's restaurants still close by for dinner.

Altea is a short drive south. Its whitewashed old town climbs to a church with blue-tiled domes, and the lanes are full of small galleries and places to eat. Inland, the mountains rise quickly. The castle village of Guadalest sits on a rocky spur above a turquoise reservoir, and the Jalón valley is wine country, white with almond blossom in late winter. Most of this is within an hour of Calpe, which makes for easy day trips when you have had enough of the pool.
Explore the Costa Blanca
Calpe eats from its own boats. The local dish is llauna, fish from the bay baked in a tin tray with potato and tomato. Rice is the other staple, from arroz a banda cooked in fish stock to paella with seafood, and the restaurants by the port are the place to try both.
The beach season runs from June to September, and July and August are hot and busy. Spring and autumn are better for walking. In mid to late October the town holds its Moros y Cristianos fiestas, with parades, and Moorish boats landing for a staged battle on Arenal-Bol beach. Our concierge can book tables, boat trips and transfers.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
