Apartments above the morning market, between Palazzo Farnese, Via Giulia and the Tiber
As featured in
Campo de' Fiori is one of the few great piazzas in Rome without a church. It has a market instead, held every morning except Sunday, and a hooded bronze statue of Giordano Bruno, the philosopher burned on this spot in 1600. By midday the stalls have gone and the cafés take over. By evening the square belongs to the Romans and everyone else.
Our collection here runs to 50+ apartments, most of them in old palazzi on the lanes around the square and Piazza Farnese. They range from one-bedroom flats for a couple to family apartments with up to 7 bedrooms, and many come with terraces and air conditioning. That matters more in a Roman July than you might think.
Below is a guide to the neighbourhood, the walks from your door and the best time to come.

The name means field of flowers, a reminder that this was open meadow before the medieval city grew up around it. Today the market sells fruit, vegetables, flowers, spices and dried pasta, and the trick is to come early, before the tour groups, and shop as the locals do.
Giordano Bruno's statue went up in 1889 and still faces towards the Vatican, which was the point. Around him, the bakery on the corner turns out pizza bianca by the slice, and the lanes leading off the square, Via dei Giubbonari among them, are full of small shops and trattorie.

A minute's walk away, Piazza Farnese is calmer and grander. The palazzo was begun by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and completed with help from Michelangelo. It is now the French Embassy, and guided tours to see the Carracci frescoes can be booked in advance. Its two fountains use granite basins taken from the Baths of Caracalla.
Behind it runs Via Giulia, laid out by Bramante for Pope Julius II, a long, straight street of palazzi, antique dealers and ivy. Nearby, Galleria Spada holds Borromini's famous colonnade, which looks deep but is in fact less than ten metres long.

This is one of the best-placed neighbourhoods in Rome for walking. Piazza Navona and the Pantheon are a few minutes north. To the east, Largo di Torre Argentina holds the remains of the temples close to where Julius Caesar was killed. The curve of Pompey's theatre still shapes the buildings on Via di Grotta Pinta.
Head south and you reach the Jewish Quarter and its artichokes. Cross Ponte Sisto, the footbridge over the Tiber, and you are in Trastevere for dinner.

Roman cooking is simple and fiercely defended: cacio e pepe, carbonara, supplì and, from roughly February to April, artichokes, either braised alla romana or deep-fried alla giudia in the Ghetto. Spring and autumn are the loveliest times to come, warm enough for lunch outside without the full weight of summer. Easter is busy, and July and August are hot, which is when a terrace and air conditioning earn their keep. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, private guides for the Vatican and the Forum, and transfers from Fiumicino.

Yes. It is central, flat and walkable, with Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Jewish Quarter and Trastevere all within a few minutes on foot. Piazza Farnese and Via Giulia nearby offer the same location with quieter streets.
The square itself is lively in the evening, with bars and restaurants busy until late. The side streets and the area around Piazza Farnese are noticeably calmer, and we can suggest apartments that suit light sleepers.
Fiumicino airport is around 45 minutes by car, depending on traffic, and Ciampino is a little closer. Many of the lanes around the square are restricted to traffic, so a private transfer arranged by our concierge is the easiest option.
