Apartments and townhouses in Rome's first rione, a short stroll from the Colosseum and the Imperial Fora
As featured in
Monti was the Suburra of ancient Rome, a crowded and rather disreputable quarter tucked behind the Imperial Fora, where the young Julius Caesar is said to have grown up. Today it is Rione I, the first of the city's historic districts, and it has kept the feel of a neighbourhood: ivy on the walls, artisans' workshops, small wine bars, and Romans sitting on the steps of the fountain in Piazza della Madonna dei Monti as the evening cools.
Our Monti collection runs to 38 apartments, from one-bedroom flats in old palazzi to townhouses and larger apartments with up to 3 bedrooms, several with terraces, rooftop views or a private courtyard. Air conditioning is common, which matters a great deal in a Roman July.
Below you will find where to stay in the rione, what lies within walking distance and when Rome is at its best.

The heart of Monti is a small grid of sloping streets: Via Urbana, Via del Boschetto, Via Panisperna and Via dei Serpenti, all meeting near the piazza and its sixteenth-century fountain. Here you will find vintage shops, jewellers and ceramicists at work in their studios, and enoteche where an aperitivo easily turns into dinner.
It is lively in the evenings but rarely rowdy, and by mid-morning the cafés are full of locals rather than tour groups. Apartments here suit those who want to step out of the door into Roman life, not a postcard of it.

Few addresses in Rome put you closer to the ancient city. The Colosseum is a short walk from most of Monti, and Trajan's Market and the Imperial Fora lie just below the rione along Via dei Fori Imperiali. Early risers can reach the Forum and the Palatine before the coaches arrive, and walk home for lunch in the heat of the day.
Above the Colosseum, the gardens of Colle Oppio cover what remains of Nero's Golden House, the Domus Aurea, which can be visited on guided tours.

San Pietro in Vincoli, up a flight of steps from Via Cavour, holds the chains said to have bound Saint Peter and Michelangelo's Moses, carved for the tomb of Pope Julius II. Santa Maria Maggiore, one of Rome's four papal basilicas, stands at Monti's eastern edge, and around the corner the little church of Santa Prassede hides glittering ninth-century mosaics.
Each year on 5 August, Santa Maria Maggiore marks the Madonna della Neve, when white petals fall inside the basilica in memory of the miraculous summer snow that is said to have marked out its site.

Monti eats well and without fuss. Expect the Roman classics, carbonara, cacio e pepe and amatriciana, along with supplì from the counter, and in spring carciofi alla romana, artichokes braised with mint. Wine bars pour bottles from Lazio and beyond.
Spring and autumn are the loveliest times to visit, warm enough for a terrace supper and cool enough to walk the city. July and August are hot, and many Romans leave the city around Ferragosto in mid-August. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, private guides for the Forum and the Vatican, early entry tickets and airport transfers.
