Palazzo apartments and rooftop penthouses around Rome's great Baroque piazza, a short walk from the Pantheon and the Tiber
As featured in
Piazza Navona still has the long, rounded shape of the Stadium of Domitian, built in the first century AD, and you can feel the old racetrack under your feet as you cross it. Today it holds three fountains, Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers at the centre, and the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, whose façade is Borromini's. Around it runs a tight web of lanes that make up the old rioni of Parione and Ponte.
Our Navona collection runs to 34 apartments, from family apartments in old palazzi to penthouses with rooftop terraces over the domes and bell towers, and a few close to the Tiber with views towards Castel Sant'Angelo.
Here is how to make the most of the neighbourhood, and when to come.

Bernini finished the Fountain of the Four Rivers in 1651. Its river gods stand for the Nile, the Ganges, the Danube and the Río de la Plata, gathered beneath an obelisk. Romans like to say that one god shields his eyes from Borromini's church opposite, a good story spoiled only by the fact that the fountain came first.
Come early in the morning, before the painters set up their easels, or late in the evening, when the stone holds the day's warmth. In December the square fills with the stalls of the Christmas market, which runs until Epiphany on 6 January.

West of the piazza, Via dei Coronari is lined with antique dealers and leads almost straight to Ponte Sant'Angelo. Via del Governo Vecchio is busier and younger, with vintage shops and small trattorie. On the corner of Piazza di Pasquino stands Pasquino, a battered ancient torso where Romans have pinned anonymous satire for five centuries.
Tucked away behind the piazza, Santa Maria della Pace has Raphael's Sibyls inside and Bramante's cloister next door. Campo de' Fiori, with its morning market, is a five-minute stroll south.

Few neighbourhoods anywhere have this much great art packed so close together. San Luigi dei Francesi has three Caravaggio paintings of the life of St Matthew, and Sant'Agostino, a minute away, has his Madonna of Loreto with its famously dirty-footed pilgrims. Palazzo Altemps, part of the National Roman Museum, shows classical sculpture in a Renaissance palace.
Underneath it all, you can visit the remains of Domitian's stadium itself, entered just north of the piazza. The Pantheon is around five minutes away on foot.

For the best food, walk a street or two away from the piazza. The side streets are where Romans eat cacio e pepe, carbonara and supplì, and in spring there are artichokes cooked alla romana. Sit on the piazza for a drink, for the view.
April to June and September to October are the most pleasant months for walking the city. July and August are hot, and around Ferragosto, on 15 August, some family restaurants close. Our concierge can book restaurants, private guides for the Vatican and the Forum, cookery classes and airport transfers.

Spring and autumn, roughly April to June and September to October, offer warm days that are still comfortable for walking. July and August are hot, and December brings the Christmas market to Piazza Navona.
The piazza and the lanes nearby stay lively until late, especially in summer. Apartments on quieter side streets or on upper floors are calmer, and we can tell you which suit light sleepers.
