Cotswold stone cottages, family houses with pools and apartments on the high ground of north Oxfordshire
As featured in
Chipping Norton stands higher than any other town in Oxfordshire, at around 200 metres, and it has the straightforward manner of a place built on wool and later on tweed. Locals call it Chippy. The market square has Georgian fronts over much older buildings, St Mary's is a wool church paid for by medieval merchants, and Bliss Mill, the tweed mill of 1872 with its tall chimney, still watches over the valley to the west.
Our Chipping Norton collection runs to 36 homes, from honey-stone cottages for two to family houses with swimming pools, apartments with saunas and tennis courts, and a manor with 7 bedrooms for larger gatherings. Several have indoor pools, which earn their keep in an English spring.
What follows covers the town, the villages around it and the best time to come.

Chipping Norton is a working market town rather than a showpiece, and that is its appeal. A market still fills the square every Wednesday, and each September the mop fair closes the High Street to through traffic. Independent shops, cafés and old coaching inns line the streets around it.
The Theatre on Spring Street began life as a Salvation Army citadel in 1888 and now has just over 200 seats. It is one of the smallest producing theatres in the country, and its family pantomime, running from mid-November into January, sells out well ahead. Book tickets when you book the house.

Some of the best of the Cotswolds lies within a few miles. Great Tew, to the east, is a village of thatch and ironstone. Kingham, to the south west, was named England's favourite village by Country Life in 2004. Chastleton House, about four miles away, is a Jacobean house with interiors that have barely changed in four centuries.
North of town, on the Warwickshire border, the Rollright Stones are made up of three monuments: the King's Men stone circle, the King Stone and the Whispering Knights. Legend says a witch turned a king and his army to stone. The site is quiet, open all year, and best seen late on a summer evening.

Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Winston Churchill, is a short drive away at Woodstock. You can spend a whole day in the Capability Brown park alone. Oxford is around 18 miles to the south east, close enough for a morning in the Ashmolean and lunch in the covered market.
Westwards, Burford runs steeply down to the Windrush, and Stow-on-the-Wold and Moreton-in-Marsh are easy outings. Chipping Norton makes a sensible base for the northern Cotswolds because nothing is very far away.

This corner of Oxfordshire eats very well. Daylesford, near Kingham, opened in 2002 as England's first purpose-built organic farm shop, and Kingham's pubs are among the most talked about in the country. Jeremy Clarkson's Diddly Squat Farm Shop, a couple of miles away near Chadlington, has drawn visitors since Clarkson's Farm first aired in 2021.
May to September brings gardens, cricket and long evenings outside. Autumn is good for walking the Evenlode valley, and winter means log fires and the pantomime. Our concierge can book pub tables, theatre seats, private chefs and transfers from Kingham.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
