Villas above the coves of the Costa Brava and stone masias in the Empordà, with a medieval city at the centre of it all
As featured in
Girona is the province in the far north-east of Catalonia, running from the Pyrenees down to the sea. Its coast is the Costa Brava, all pine-covered headlands and small coves with very clear water. Inland lies the Empordà, a country of vineyards, olive groves and fortified medieval villages. At its heart is the city of Girona itself, with painted houses lining the river Onyar and one of the best-preserved Jewish quarters in Europe.
Our Girona collection runs to 260+ villas. There are modern houses with sea views above Begur and Llafranc, apartments and villas around Lloret de Mar, and old stone farmhouses, the masos and masias of the Empordà, set in their own land near Palafrugell, Corçà and Vilopriu.
Here is how the province divides up, when to come and what to eat once you are here.

Casa Panama | 9-Bedroom Villa in Llafranc Palafrugell9 bedroomsBegur and Palafrugell, with Llafranc and Calella, for the finest coves of the Costa Brava, Lloret de Mar and Blanes for easy beaches near the airport, and Palau-sator and the Empordà for stone farmhouses among medieval villages.

This stretch of the Baix Empordà is the Costa Brava at its best. Begur is a hill town crowned by a ruined castle. Its streets are lined with the grand houses of the indianos, local men who made their fortunes in Cuba and came home to build. Below the town are the coves of Sa Riera, Aiguablava, Fornells and Sa Tuna.
Just south, the municipality of Palafrugell takes in three seaside villages: Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu. The Camí de Ronda, an old coastal path, links them over the headlands. The gardens at Cap Roig hold a well-known music festival each summer.

A few kilometres inland the mood changes completely. Palau-sator, Pals and Peratallada are walled medieval villages of honey-coloured stone, surrounded by rice fields, sunflowers and farmland. Many of our farmhouse villas are out here, with the coast still within easy reach for a morning swim.
This is also where Salvador Dalí left his mark. The castle he gave to Gala at Púbol is a short drive from Palau-sator. His Theatre-Museum is in Figueres, and his house at Portlligat sits beside Cadaqués. The Greek and Roman ruins of Empúries, near L'Escala, make a fine morning out.

Lloret de Mar is livelier than the coves further north. Its quieter corners, such as Sa Caleta and Fenals, and the terraced Jardins de Santa Clotilde above the sea, show a gentler side of the town. Neighbouring Blanes is where the Costa Brava traditionally begins, at the rock of Sa Palomera, and its Marimurtra botanical garden looks out over the Mediterranean.
Inland, Vidreres is close to Girona airport and to the PGA Catalunya golf courses at Caldes de Malavella. That makes this end of the province a practical choice for short stays and golfing parties.

Girona eats very well. Look for the red prawns of Palamós, anchovies from L'Escala, suquet fish stew and mar i muntanya dishes that put seafood and meat on the same plate, all washed down with Empordà wine. In the city, the Roca brothers' El Celler de Can Roca has twice been named the best restaurant in the world.
Summer is for the sea. In May, the city fills its courtyards and staircases with flowers for the Temps de Flors. September and October bring warm water, a quieter coast and the grape harvest. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, boat trips and tee times.
