Barcelona is a city where you mostly walk. The Eixample, laid out on Ildefons Cerdà's grid in the nineteenth century, is home to Gaudí's Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, with the Sagrada Família a short stroll beyond. Several of Gaudí's works are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
The Gothic Quarter and El Born are older and more tangled, all narrow lanes, small squares and the cathedral. Gràcia has a village feel and plenty of terraces. When the city gets too hot, La Barceloneta and Poblenou have the beaches. Coves, cliff paths and a medieval city
The Costa Brava is the opposite of a long, flat resort beach. Around Begur and Palafrugell the coast breaks into small coves backed by pines, and the fishing villages of Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu are linked by the Camí de Ronda, an old coastal path. In early July, Calella hosts its evening concert of havaneres, the sea shanties brought back from Cuba.
Girona, inland, has one of the best-kept old towns in Spain, with coloured houses along the River Onyar, the medieval Jewish quarter and a cathedral whose Gothic nave is famously wide. Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum are a short drive north.

Beach town, wine country and high mountains
Sitges sits south of Barcelona below the Garraf hills, a whitewashed seaside town with a long promenade, a lively carnival and a fantasy film festival every October. The trains to Barcelona are frequent, which is why villas in Olivella and Sant Pere de Ribes appeal to families who want a pool and the sea but still plan days in the city.
Just inland lies the Penedès, the home of cava, where cellars around Sant Sadurní d'Anoia open their doors to visitors. In the far north west, Val d'Aran is a Pyrenean valley with its own language, Aranese, and the ski area of Baqueira-Beret, a long-standing favourite of the Spanish royal family.

Calçots in winter, cava in summer
The Catalan table starts with pa amb tomàquet, bread rubbed with tomato and olive oil, and goes from there to suquet, a fisherman's stew, botifarra sausage and crema catalana. From winter into early spring, the calçotada comes round: grilled spring onions dipped in romesco sauce, a tradition born in Valls. Girona's Temps de Flors fills the old town with flowers in May.
