Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature, and for once the cliché holds up. In a morning you can drive from the Sahara-like dunes of Maspalomas up through pine forest to Roque Nublo, a volcanic monolith 80 metres tall whose top stands at 1,813 metres. You can then be back down in time for a late lunch of grilled fish by the sea. The south has sun when much of Europe has none, which is why the British have been coming here in winter for decades.

Dunes, a lighthouse and the sunniest coast
The south of the island gets the most reliable sunshine, and most of our villas are found here, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The great sight is the Maspalomas dunes, a protected nature reserve of shifting sand that runs down to the sea. Go early in the morning, before the heat, and the footprints from the day before have mostly blown away.
At the western end, the old lighthouse stands over the seafront promenade towards Meloneras, which is lined with restaurants. Inland, El Salobre and the other golf courses climb into the dry hills, and villas up here look out over the fairways towards the coast. Puerto de Mogán, with its little canals and fishing harbour, is a short drive west.

Columbus, Carnival and a city beach
Las Palmas is a proper Atlantic city, and it comes as a pleasant surprise to anyone who knows only the south. Vegueta, the old quarter, has cobbled streets, the cathedral of Santa Ana and the Casa de Colón, a museum about Columbus, who stopped on the island in 1492 on his way to the Americas.
Across town, Las Canteras is one of the best city beaches in Spain, protected by a natural reef and backed by a long promenade. Carnival, usually held in February or early March, fills the streets for weeks. The north is greener than the south and a little cooler, and villas here suit those who want restaurants and culture within easy reach.

Into the clouds, and back in time
The centre of the island is a different world of ravines, pine forest and whitewashed villages such as Tejeda and Artenara. Almost half of Gran Canaria is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Since 2019, the cave dwellings and sacred peaks of Risco Caído, left by the island's pre-Hispanic people, have been a World Heritage Site.
The walk up to Roque Nublo is short, steep and rewarding, and on a clear day Mount Teide on Tenerife floats on the horizon. Pico de las Nieves, at 1,949 metres, is the highest peak with a road to the top. On the way down, stop at Teror, whose basilica and wooden balconies are among the finest on the island.

Papas arrugadas, mojo and a winter tan
Canarian cooking is simple and very good. Try papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salted water until their skins wrinkle, served with red and green mojo sauces. Then there is fresh grilled cherne or vieja, and goat's cheese from the hills. In the Agaete valley in the north west, coffee is grown alongside the vines, which is rare in Europe.
The climate is mild all year. Winter is the high season in the south, spring brings wild flowers to the mountains, and summer is warm without the furnace heat of mainland Spain.
