Villas in San Bartolomé de Tirajana

From the dunes to the caldera, in one municipality

Most visitors to southern Gran Canaria spend their whole holiday in San Bartolomé de Tirajana without ever hearing the name. It is the island's largest municipality, a long wedge of land running from the Caldera de Tirajana in the mountains down to the beaches of Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Meloneras. The coast gets the sun and the crowds. The hills get the almond terraces, the palm groves and the cherry liqueur.

Our collection here runs to 100+ villas. Most sit near the coast: modern houses with private pools around Maspalomas and Meloneras, and villas with heated pools at the Salobre Golf Resort, in the hills behind. A few are further inland, including larger family estates in the countryside.

Here is how the area divides up, and when to come.

Where to stay in San Bartolomé de Tirajana

Maspalomas and Meloneras for the dunes, beaches and promenade, Salobre for golf and quiet, and Tunte and the Fataga valley for walking and old Canarian villages.

Maspalomas & Meloneras

Sand dunes, a lighthouse and a long promenade

The Maspalomas dunes are the reason most people come here. This protected nature reserve of shifting sand runs down to the sea between Playa del Inglés and the Maspalomas lighthouse, and walking across it at sunrise, before the heat and the day trippers, is one of the great small pleasures of the island.

West of the lighthouse, Meloneras is newer and smarter, with a seafront promenade lined with restaurants and gentler beaches. Villas in either area put the sea a short drive or a walk away, and the larger houses suit families who want space without being far from the beach.

Salobre & the Golf

Fairways in the hills behind the coast

A few minutes inland from Maspalomas, the Salobre Golf Resort sits among dry, sculpted hills with views down to the sea. Its two courses make it a natural base for golfers, and villas here tend to be quieter than those on the coast, with heated pools for the cooler winter evenings.

There is more golf by the sea: Maspalomas Golf runs beside the dunes, and Meloneras has its own course near the lighthouse. Our concierge can book tee times across all three.

Tunte & the Fataga Valley

The other half of the municipality

Drive north on the GC-60 and the resorts fall away quickly. The road climbs through the Fataga ravine, past palm groves and the pre-Hispanic necropolis at Arteara, to the village of Fataga and then to Tunte, the municipal capital at around 850 metres, set inside the great Caldera de Tirajana.

Tunte has a parish church, cobbled lanes and bars serving guindilla, a cherry liqueur made in the village. Old mule tracks make a fine walk from Tunte down through the terraces to Arteara, and the Bodega Las Tirajanas makes wine from local vineyards.

Food, Fiestas & the Seasons

Wrinkled potatoes, mojo and two summer saints

The local table is simple and good: papas arrugadas, small salt-crusted potatoes, with red and green mojo sauces, grilled fish, goat's cheese and, to finish, bienmesabe, an almond dessert. Up in the hills, try mejunje, a mix of rum, honey and lemon.

The south coast is warm all year, which makes it one of the most reliable winter sun destinations within reach of Britain. Tunte holds its biggest fiestas in summer, for Santiago in late July and San Bartolomé on 24 August. Our concierge can arrange tee times, a private chef, boat trips, hiking guides and transfers from the airport.
