Villas in Maspalomas

Sand dunes, a lighthouse and sunshine in January

Maspalomas sits at the southern tip of Gran Canaria, the sunniest corner of the island, and it has one feature no other resort in Europe can quite match: around 400 hectares of shifting sand dunes, protected as a nature reserve, running down to the Atlantic. At their western edge stands the Faro de Maspalomas, a stone lighthouse 56 metres tall that has guided ships since 1890.

Our Maspalomas collection runs to 80+ villas, from modern two-bedroom villas with mountain views at Salobre Golf Resort to contemporary golf villas near Meloneras beach and larger family houses, many with private pools and the biggest with 6 bedrooms.

What follows covers where to stay, what lies beyond the beach and when the island is at its best.

Where to stay in Maspalomas

Meloneras for the seafront promenade and restaurants, Salobre Golf Resort for quiet hillside villas and fairways, and the streets around the dunes for walking to the beach, with the rest of Gran Canaria an easy drive away.

The Dunes & the Lighthouse

A small desert beside the Atlantic

The Dunas de Maspalomas are best walked early in the morning, before the sand warms, when the wind has smoothed the ridges overnight and the only footprints belong to lizards. Marked paths cross the reserve to the long beach that runs east towards Playa del Inglés.

At the western end, La Charca, a brackish lagoon fringed with Canary palms, is a resting place for migrating birds between Europe and Africa. The lighthouse stands just beyond it, and the promenade beneath is where much of Maspalomas gathers to watch the sun go down.

Meloneras & Salobre

A seafront promenade and fairways in the hills

Meloneras, just west of the lighthouse, is the smarter end of the coast, with a long promenade lined with restaurants and terrace bars, and small beaches below. Villas here put dinner within walking distance.

Inland, Salobre Golf Resort climbs into the dry, sculpted hills behind the coast, with its own golf and views towards the mountains. It is quieter and more private, and still only a short drive from the sea. Maspalomas Golf, beside the dunes, adds a further course close to town.

Beyond the Coast

Mountain villages, a fishing harbour and an old city

Gran Canaria rewards anyone who hires a car. Puerto de Mogán, around half an hour west, is a pretty harbour of whitewashed houses and canals, with a busy market on Fridays. An hour or so inland, the road winds up to Tejeda and the basalt monolith of Roque Nublo, with the island's summit pines and, on clear days, Tenerife's Mount Teide floating on the horizon.

Las Palmas, on the north-east coast, is a real city, with the old quarter of Vegueta, the Casa de Colón museum and Las Canteras, one of the best city beaches in Spain.

Food & the Seasons

Wrinkled potatoes, mojo and winter sunshine

The Canarian table is simple and very good: papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salted water until their skins wrinkle, served with red and green mojo sauces; grilled fresh fish; goat's cheese; and a glass of local rum to finish. Mountain villages are the place for a long Sunday lunch.

Maspalomas is warm all year, which makes it one of the most reliable winter sun destinations within reach of the UK. Summer is hotter and busier, while the carnival brightens late winter. Our concierge can arrange car hire, golf, boat trips, a private chef and transfers from the airport.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
