Villas in San Pedro de Alcántara

A real Andalusian town on Marbella's western edge

San Pedro de Alcántara began in 1860 as a model farming colony founded by the Marqués del Duero, who planted sugar cane on the fertile plain between the rivers. A century later Marbella's first golf course opened at Guadalmina, and the town never looked back. It is still part of Marbella, but it has its own church square, its own feria and a pace that the glossier stretches of the coast have rather lost.

Our San Pedro collection runs to 90+ properties, from apartments with sea views and shared pools to hillside villas with infinity pools and spas, and a handful of very large houses for family gatherings.

Here is a guide to the town, its beaches and the hills behind it.

The Town

A church square, a boulevard and a long promenade

The old heart of San Pedro is the Plaza de la Iglesia, with its white parish church, cafés and the paseo of families each evening. The A-7 coast road, which used to cut the town in two, now runs through a tunnel beneath the Bulevar, a long park with fountains and playgrounds that links the centre to the sea.

On the seafront, the promenade runs past beach restaurants towards Guadalmina in one direction and Puerto Banús in the other. La Alcoholera, once part of the sugar industry, is now a performing arts centre. It is a place for living in, not just visiting, which is exactly its appeal.

Guadalmina & the Romans

Fairways, a royal club and second-century baths

Guadalmina, on the western side of town, is where the Costa del Sol's golf story began. The South Course of the Real Club de Golf Guadalmina opened in 1959, designed by Javier Arana, and the club now has two 18-hole courses running down towards the beach.

Close to the mouth of the Guadalmina river are the Roman baths of Las Bóvedas, an octagonal building from the second or third century, and the remains of the early Christian basilica of Vega del Mar, a few hundred metres away. Golf Valley in Nueva Andalucía, with several more courses, is only a short drive east.

Into the Hills

Benahavís, the gorge road and Ronda

Behind the town the land rises quickly into the Serranía de Ronda, which is why so many San Pedro villas look back over the sea. Benahavís, a white village known for its restaurants, sits up the Guadalmina valley about ten minutes away.

The mountain road from San Pedro climbs all the way to Ronda, with its gorge and eighteenth-century bridge, and makes one of the best day trips in Andalusia. Leave early, take a jumper and book lunch.

Food, the Feria & the Seasons

Espetos on the beach and a week of fiesta in October

The local pleasure is espetos, sardines threaded on a cane and grilled over embers in a boat on the sand at the beach restaurants, followed by a plate of fried fish and something cold. In summer, chilled ajoblanco is the thing to order.

The beach season runs from June to September, and spring and autumn are ideal for golf and walking. In mid-October the town holds its feria in honour of San Pedro de Alcántara, with casetas, horses, concerts and a procession on the 19th. Our concierge can arrange tee times at Guadalmina, restaurant tables, boat days from Puerto Banús and transfers.
