Villas, castles and palazzo apartments around a Gothic city, from the Chianti hills to the Val d'Orcia
As featured in
Siena is the city Florence never quite managed to absorb. Its medieval centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still turns around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo, and its people still belong first to their contrada, the seventeen city wards that race each other bareback around the square every summer. Few places in Italy wear their history so lightly and guard it so fiercely.
Beyond the walls lies the province, and this is where most of our 170+ villas are. They range from country villas with pools among the vineyards and cypresses to a castle in the Arbia valley and apartments in old palazzi, and the largest sleep up to 60 guests.
Here is how the city and its hills divide, and when best to come.

Villa Carli | 16-Bedroom Villa in Siena Colle di Val d’Elsa16 bedroomsSouthern Chianti for vineyards within easy reach of the city, the Val d'Orcia around Montalcino and Pienza for classic Tuscan landscape, and the far south near Radicofani and Sarteano for quiet hilltop villages.

Everything in Siena drifts down to the Campo, a sloping square of brick paving where it is entirely acceptable to sit on the ground with a gelato. Above it rises the Palazzo Pubblico, whose council chamber holds Ambrogio Lorenzetti's frescoes of Good and Bad Government, painted in the 1330s as a sort of medieval civics lesson, and the Torre del Mangia, climbed by around 400 steps.
The striped marble Duomo is a short walk uphill. Do not miss the Piccolomini Library inside, painted by Pinturicchio in colours that still look freshly done. Then wander the contrade, each with its own fountain, chapel and animal emblem, from the Owl to the Snail.

South of the city, the clay hills of the Crete Senesi give way to the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO-listed landscape of cypress avenues and lone farmhouses that Renaissance painters used as a backdrop. Pienza was rebuilt by Pope Pius II as an ideal town, Montalcino makes Brunello, and at Bagno Vignoni the village square is a pool of thermal water.
Below Montalcino, the hamlet of Castelnuovo dell'Abate sits beside the Romanesque abbey of Sant'Antimo. Further south, Radicofani's fortress watches over the Via Francigena, once the lair of Ghino di Tacco, a gentleman bandit who turns up in Boccaccio.

The southern half of Chianti belongs to the province of Siena, and villas around Castelnuovo Berardenga, San Gusmè and Radda in Chianti put you among the vineyards yet within a short drive of the Campo. This is the gentlest way to combine city and country.
To the north west, Monteriggioni's ring of walls and towers looks almost exactly as it did when Dante mentioned it, and San Gimignano, another UNESCO site, keeps its medieval towers. Visit both early in the morning, before the coaches arrive.

Sienese cooking is plain and generous: hand-rolled pici with garlic and tomato, cinta senese pork from the native breed of black pig, and panforte and almond ricciarelli at Christmas. To drink, there is Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, all made within the province.
May, June and September are the loveliest months. July and August are hot and busy, and the Palio on 2 July and 16 August fills the city. October brings the grape harvest. Our concierge can arrange wine tastings, a private chef, Palio tickets and drivers for long lunches.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Southern Chianti, around Castelnuovo Berardenga, suits those who want vineyards and easy trips into the city. The Val d'Orcia, near Montalcino and Pienza, is best for classic Tuscan scenery, wine and thermal springs, and the far south around Radicofani is quieter still.
May, June and September have warm weather and fewer crowds. July and August are hot and include the Palio, and October is harvest time in the vineyards.
The Palio is run in the Piazza del Campo on 2 July and 16 August each year. Ten of the city's seventeen contrade compete in a bareback horse race lasting around ninety seconds, with days of trials and processions beforehand. Seats on the stands around the square sell out early.
