Chalets and apartments in the Pyrenean valley that faces the Atlantic, a short drive from the lifts of Baqueira Beret
As featured in
The Val d'Aran is the only part of Catalonia on the northern side of the Pyrenees, and you notice it at once. Its rivers run to the Atlantic, the Garonne rises on the Pla de Beret at the top of the valley, and the climate is green and damp rather than Mediterranean. That is why the snow here is the most reliable in Spain. The valley even has its own language, Aranese, a form of Occitan that is official alongside Catalan and Spanish.
Our collection runs to 60+ chalets and apartments along the valley. You will find slate-roofed houses in Arties and Salardú, apartments a short hop from the Baqueira lifts and family homes further down towards Bossòst. The largest has 5 bedrooms, and several come with log fires or hot tubs for the evenings.
Below is a guide to the villages, the skiing and the valley once the snow has gone.

Chalet Aiguamog Baqueira: Spacious 4-Bedroom Ski Chalet with Mountain Views – Val d’Aran4 bedroomsArties and Salardú for stone villages close to the lifts, Baqueira for the shortest run to the slopes, Vielha for restaurants and life all year, and Bossòst for a quieter lower valley towards France.

Vielha, the capital, sits at around 1,000 metres where the Nere meets the Garonne. It has the valley's best choice of shops and restaurants, and its church of Sant Miquèu holds the Crist de Mijaran, a 12th-century wooden carving. The Museu dera Val d'Aran tells the story of a valley that was cut off for much of every winter.
Higher up, Arties and Salardú are the favourites for skiers. Santa Maria d'Arties has a five-storey belfry, and the tower of Sant Andreu in Salardú can be seen from across the upper valley. Gessa, Unha and Bagergue are smaller and quieter. Downstream, Bossòst is close to the French border, and its 12th-century church of the Purificació is among the finest in the valley.

Baqueira Beret covers around 170 kilometres of pistes across the Baqueira, Beret, Bonaigua and Baciver sectors, all on one lift pass. The vertical drop is over 1,000 metres. The resort faces west on the northern side of the Pyrenees, so Atlantic storms leave it with a far better snow record than most of Spain.
Beret is a broad, gentle plateau that suits beginners and families. Baqueira and Bonaigua have long reds and steeper blacks, and confident skiers will find the best off-piste in the country. The Spanish royal family are regulars, which tells you something about the tone. Most of our homes are within a short drive or bus ride of the lifts, and some are closer still.

Once the snow melts, the valley turns very green. Walkers head for the high lakes and passes, and cyclists climb the Port de la Bonaigua. The Garonne starts on the Pla de Beret as a mountain stream and runs all the way to Bordeaux.
On 23 June, the eve of Saint John, Les burns its Haro, a fir trunk around twelve metres tall, in the village square while Aranese dances go on around the flames. Arties burns its Taro on the same night. Both belong to the Pyrenean summer solstice fire festivals, which UNESCO recognised as intangible heritage in 2015. Barcelona is around four hours away, so you can easily add a few days in the city.

Aranese cooking is mountain food. The dish to try is olla aranesa, a slow, hearty stew of meat, beans and vegetables that makes sense after a day on the hill. Vielha has its own pintxos route for evenings when nobody wants to cook.
The ski season usually runs from late November or early December into April, and January to March brings the most dependable snow. June to September is the time for walking, and late June catches the fire festivals. Our concierge can arrange transfers from Toulouse or Barcelona, lift passes, mountain guides and restaurant tables in the valley.

Toulouse is the nearest international airport, around 166 kilometres and two hours away by road. Barcelona is around four hours away, through the Vielha tunnel. Our concierge can arrange private transfers from either.
Aranese, a form of Occitan, is official in the valley alongside Catalan and Spanish. You will see it on signs and menus, but Spanish is spoken everywhere and English is common in the ski areas.
