Villas in Begur

A castle on the hill, a Cuban past and coves below

Begur sits on a hill about two kilometres back from the sea, and the climb up to its ruined castle shows you the whole arrangement at once. There are tiled roofs and church towers, then pine woods running down to a coastline of small coves, with the Empordà plain stretching off towards the Pyrenees. Not many towns on the Costa Brava give you this much in such a small space.

We have 70+ villas in and around Begur. They range from stone fincas and village houses with gardens to contemporary villas on the wooded slopes above Sa Riera, Aiguablava and Fornells, many with views of the sea.

What follows is a guide to the town, the coves and the season, with a word on lunch.

The Town

Indianos, a castle and a September party

In the nineteenth century, hundreds of young men left Begur for Cuba. Those who did well came home and built colonnaded, pastel-coloured mansions, the cases d'indians, which still stand among the medieval lanes. A signed route through town leads you past the finest of them, and a few now house restaurants and small hotels.

The castle above dates from the eleventh century and is a ruin today. The walk up takes about ten minutes, and it is best near sunset. In early September the town holds the Fira d'Indians, three days of habaneras, rum and Cuban music, when much of Begur dresses in white linen.

The Coves

From Sa Riera to Aiguablava

Going south from the town, the coast runs Sa Riera, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Platja Fonda, Fornells and Aiguablava. Sa Riera has the longest stretch of sand and suits families. Sa Tuna is a tiny fishing hamlet where whitewashed houses and a defence tower look over the boats pulled up on the shingle. Platja Fonda sits at the bottom of a long flight of steps under red cliffs, and Aiguablava is known for its turquoise water.

The Camí de Ronda, the old coastal path, links most of these coves through the pines. In summer a local bus runs from the town down to the main beaches, which saves you hunting for a parking space.

Pals, Palafrugell and a day in Girona

Pals, a medieval village of honey-coloured stone, is a short drive inland, and the rice fields on the plain below it are why rice dishes appear on so many local menus. Just to the south is Palafrugell, with the seaside villages of Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu. On summer evenings, the gardens at Cap Roig hold a concert festival above the sea.

The old city of Girona is around fifty kilometres away. Its cathedral steps, Jewish quarter and the houses along the River Onyar are well worth a day.

Food & When to Go

Red prawns, suquet and a long September

This part of the Empordà eats very well. Look for the red prawns landed at nearby Palamós, suquet (a Catalan fish stew), rice from Pals, and wines from the Empordà vineyards inland. Lunch at a cove-side restaurant at Aiguablava or Sa Tuna can easily take the whole afternoon.

May, June and September bring warm sea and quieter coves. August is the busiest and hottest month, and parking at the beaches gets hard. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, kayak and boat trips along the coast, a private chef and transfers from Girona or Barcelona.

Why book your Begur villa with Excellence Luxury Villas

The right house, not the nearest one

Begur's villas are spread across steep wooded slopes and narrow lanes, and we know which ones let you walk to a cove or into town, and which need a car. With 70+ properties in Begur, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.

Book direct

You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.

A concierge who knows the territory

Restaurant reservations, kayak and boat trips along the coves, a private chef, wine tours in the Empordà, car hire and transfers from Girona or Barcelona. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
