Villas in Sant Lluís

A French-built town at the sunny tip of Menorca

Sant Lluís is a whitewashed town that owes its name and its tidy grid of streets to the French, who founded it in 1761 while they held Menorca and named it after Saint Louis, King of France. An eighteenth-century windmill, the Molí de Dalt, stands at the entrance to the town. Around it, the municipality runs down through stone-walled fields to a coast of small coves, defence towers and fishing hamlets.

Our Sant Lluís collection runs to 110+ villas. They range from family houses with private pools in the countryside around town to sea-view villas in Binibèquer, Punta Prima, Cap d'en Font and Torret, several of them with spas.

It is a compact part of the island, and the airport and Mahón are both close by. Here is how the area divides up, and when to come.

Where to stay in Sant Lluís

The Town

A windmill, a French grid and a good dinner

Sant Lluís is small, white and easy to walk around. The Molí de Dalt is now an ethnological museum full of old farm tools from the island's rural trades, and the parish church, finished in 1783, faces the main square. In July and August a craft market fills the main street on Friday evenings.

The town and the hamlets around it have a strong reputation for restaurants, and the island's capital, Mahón, is a short drive away. A villa in the countryside between them gives you peace by the pool and dinner within easy reach.

Binibèquer

A fishing village that is younger than it looks

Binibèquer Vell looks like an ancient fishing hamlet: a tangle of whitewashed houses, narrow alleys and tiny squares running down to the water. In fact it was built as a holiday village from the 1960s, designed by the Barcelona architect Francisco Barba Corsini. It is very pretty, and residents ask visitors to keep their voices down.

Next door, Binibèquer Nou and Cap d'en Font are quieter residential areas of villas above the rocks, with sea views and a short walk to the sandy cove of Binibèquer beach.

The Coast

Coves, towers and a lighthouse offshore

The coastline of Sant Lluís is a run of small inlets rather than long strands. Binissafúller and Biniancolla are tiny coves lined with fishermen's boathouses. Punta Prima has a sandy beach that families like, with the striped lighthouse of the Illa de l'Aire just offshore. Further north, Alcaufar is a little harbour watched over by an old defence tower.

The Camí de Cavalls, the old bridleway that circles the whole island, passes along this coast and makes good walking outside high summer.

Food, Fiestas & the Seasons

Horses in August, gin by the glass

The town's fiesta is held on the last weekend of August. Riders in traditional dress bring their horses into the crowd for the jaleo, the horses rearing to the band while everyone drinks pomada, Menorcan gin with lemonade. Mahón cheese, ensaïmada pastries and fish from the island's waters fill out the table, and the Binifadet winery sits just outside town.

June to September is the season for swimming. May and October are warm, green and quieter for walking. Our concierge can arrange boat days, restaurant tables, car hire and airport transfers.
