Sitges has been doing things its own way since the 1890s, when the painter Santiago Rusiñol made it the seaside outpost of Catalan Modernisme. The whitewashed old town still climbs to a church on a rocky headland above the sea. The town is famously open and welcoming, it throws the liveliest carnival on the coast, and Barcelona is only around 40 kilometres up the road.

Sitges town for the old quarter, the beaches and dinner on foot, the Garraf slopes for sea views, and Sant Pere de Ribes and Olivella for space, vines and quiet.
A church on the rocks and a painter's house
Old Sitges is small enough to learn in an afternoon. The church of Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla stands on the headland, and right beside it is the Cau Ferrat, Rusiñol's house and studio, now a museum of his paintings, wrought iron and works by friends such as El Greco and the young Picasso. Next door, the Palau de Maricel was built for the American collector Charles Deering and looks straight out over the Mediterranean.
Along the seafront, the grand houses of the americanos, locals who made their fortunes in Cuba, are a reminder that the Bacardí family's founder was born here. Below them, the beaches of La Ribera and Sant Sebastià are lined with restaurants for a long, late lunch.

Sant Pere de Ribes, Olivella and the Garraf
Climb a few minutes inland and the town gives way to terraced hillsides, pine woods and vineyards. This is where you find the larger villas and the masias, with more garden, more privacy and views that run down over the rooftops to the sea.
Sant Pere de Ribes is the nearest of the villages, with an old centre of its own and easy access to the beaches. Olivella sits higher up, on the edge of the Garraf Natural Park, a limestone massif crossed by walking and cycling trails. You will want a car up here, but the quiet more than repays the short drive into town.

Barcelona one way, the Penedès the other
Sitges makes a calm base for Barcelona. The train runs along the coast to the city in about 40 minutes, so a morning at the Sagrada Família or the Picasso Museum can still end with a swim back at the villa.
Inland, the Penedès is Catalonia's great wine country, and Sant Sadurní d'Anoia is the home of cava, with cellars open for tastings. Closer to home, the little bay at Garraf, with its row of green and white bathing huts, is worth the short coastal drive, and the marina at Aiguadolç is the place to pick up a boat for the afternoon.

The local dish is xató, a winter salad of endive with salt cod, anchovies and a nutty sauce related to romesco, and the town has made its own sweet malvasia wine for centuries. Sitges likes a party: Carnival in February or early March, carpets of flowers laid in the streets for Corpus Christi, the Festa Major in late August with fireworks over the church, and the International Fantastic Film Festival every October.
