Fincas and sea-view villas on Ibiza's gentler east coast, from Cap Martinet to the pine woods of Sant Carles
As featured in
People who know Ibiza well often keep quiet about Santa Eulalia. The municipality covers most of the island's north-east. Its main town, Santa Eulària des Riu in Catalan, is a neat, family-minded place with a seafront promenade, a marina and a whitewashed fortress church on the hill above. The town takes its name from that church and from the river that runs into it, the only river in the Balearic Islands.
Our collection here runs to 120+ villas, and they vary a good deal. There are restored fincas among the almond and carob trees inland, contemporary villas with sea views above S'Argamassa and Cap Martinet, and large estates near Sant Carles sleeping up to 24 guests.
Below is a guide to the town, the coast and the countryside, and to the best time to see each.

Santa Eulalia's centre is small and easy to walk. The seafront promenade follows the sandy town beach to the marina. Just inland, the Passeig de s'Alamera is a shady boulevard with a small craft market on most mornings. Restaurants fill the streets behind it, and dinner here means a long table outdoors rather than a velvet rope.
Walk up the Puig de Missa, 52 metres above the sea, to the white church consecrated in 1568 and fortified against the pirates who once raided this coast. Next door, the farmhouse of Can Ros holds the Ethnographic Museum of Ibiza. Down below, a marked path follows the river past the Pont Vell, an old bridge with three arches, to the sea.

North of town, the coast is a string of family beaches and small coves. S'Argamassa and Es Canar are the easy ones, with calm, shallow water and cafés. Cala Nova and Cala Llenya are a little wilder. Further on, Cala Mastella and Cala Boix sit below pine-covered slopes, and Aigües Blanques, beneath low cliffs, is the place for a long swim.
South of town, Cala Llonga lies in a deep, sheltered inlet. Cap Martinet looks across the bay to Ibiza Town and Talamanca beach, so the old town's restaurants and marinas are a short drive away but you still have the view.

Inland, the municipality turns rural: whitewashed farmhouses, terraces of olive, carob and almond, and quiet lanes running between village churches. Sant Carles de Peralta was at the heart of Ibiza's hippy years. Las Dalias, on the edge of the village, has held a market every Saturday since 1985, with night markets in summer.
Santa Gertrudis, in the middle of the island, has a small square lined with cafés and some of Ibiza's most relaxed long lunches. Out here you have privacy, space and peace, with the sea a short drive away.

Ibizan cooking is country food. Look out for bullit de peix, fish stewed with potatoes and followed by rice cooked in the broth, and sofrit pagès, a hearty farmhouse dish of meats and potatoes. For pudding there is flaó, a cheesecake scented with mint. A fish lunch by the water at Cala Mastella is something of a local ritual.
The beach season runs from June to September, and May and October are warm and much quieter. The town honours its patron saint on 12 February. On the first Sunday of May its streets fill with decorated carts, traditional dress and flowers. The Punta Arabí market in Es Canar runs on Wednesdays from April to October. Our concierge can book tables, boat days, tee times at Golf Ibiza near Cala Llonga and transfers.
