Villas with pools and Pacific views on the Big Island's Kohala Coast and the west shore of Maui
As featured in
Hawaii is a long way from Britain, and most people who make the journey stay at least a fortnight. They have good reason. On the Big Island you can swim off a white sand beach in the morning, drive up through cattle country at lunch and watch the sun go down from the slopes of Mauna Kea. In winter, humpback whales come close enough to the shore to be watched from a villa terrace.
Our Hawaii collection runs to 160+ villas and apartments. Most are on the Big Island, around the Kohala Coast, Waikoloa, Kawaihae and Kona, with more on the west coast of Maui at Kaanapali. They range from one-bedroom hideaways to family villas with up to 6 bedrooms, many with private pools, and some sit on golf courses with views out to the sea.
Here is how to choose an island, when to come and what to do once you arrive.

The Big Island's west coast is the driest and sunniest part of the island. Along it, the resorts of Waikoloa, Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea have laid out golf courses and gardens across old lava flows. In between are some of the best beaches in Hawaii: Hapuna, a long, wide arc of pale sand, and Kaunaoa, a quieter crescent below the Mauna Kea resort.
Further north, Kawaihae has a small working harbour and the great stone temple of Puukohola Heiau, built by Kamehameha I. North Kohala beyond it is all ranch land and small towns, and the road ends at the Pololu Valley lookout, with a steep trail down to a black boulder beach.

Kailua-Kona is the Big Island's main town on the west coast, with a seafront lined with cafés, a historic royal palace and boats that take you out at night to snorkel with manta rays. On the slopes above it, small farms grow Kona coffee, and many will show you round and pour you a cup.
Inland, Waimea is a cool, green upland town at the heart of Hawaii's paniolo, or cowboy, country, home to the Parker Ranch and some very good restaurants. It feels nothing like the coast below, which is the Big Island all over: it changes climate with almost every half hour of driving.

On Maui, our apartments and villas are on the west shore around Kaanapali, a long beach with Black Rock at its northern end, where snorkellers swim among turtles. The great Maui excursion is the drive up Haleakala, at just over 3,000 metres, to watch the sun rise above the clouds. Sunrise visits need a permit, booked well in advance.
Back on the Big Island, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built around Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes on earth. It is around two and a half hours' drive from Kona, so most people make a long day of it or stay the night.

Hawaiian food is a cheerful mix of island, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese and American cooking. Try poke, cubes of raw fish dressed with soy and sesame, a plate lunch from a roadside counter, loco moco, and shave ice on a hot afternoon. The Kona Coffee Cultural Festival takes place in November, and the Merrie Monarch Festival, the great hula competition, fills Hilo in the week after Easter.
The leeward coasts are warm all year. Humpback whales are here from roughly December to April, and the summer months bring calmer seas. Our concierge can arrange whale watching, manta ray snorkelling, tee times, a guided trip up Mauna Kea and restaurant tables.

With 160+ properties in Hawaii, we can usually find the house that suits you rather than the one that happens to be free. Search by size, pool, location and price, or tell us what you have in mind and we will put together a shortlist.
You book with us directly, with no booking fees. Questions about access, parking, pool heating or how far it really is to the nearest beach go to people who can find out the answer.
Whale watching, manta ray snorkelling at night, Mauna Kea stargazing tours, tee times on the Kohala Coast, a private chef, car hire and transfers from Kona and Kahului. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.
Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Most of our villas are on the Big Island, along the Kohala Coast, in Waikoloa, Kawaihae and around Kona. We also have villas and apartments on Maui's west coast, around Kaanapali.
The Kohala Coast and Waikoloa are the most popular choice, for their sunny weather, beaches and golf. Kona puts you close to town, the coffee farms and the boats, and North Kohala and Waimea suit those who want quiet and space.
The west coasts are warm and sunny all year. April to October tends to be drier with calmer seas, and December to April is the season for humpback whales.

These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.
There are no direct flights from the UK. Most travellers change on the US West Coast, often in Los Angeles or San Francisco, and fly on to Kona for the Big Island or Kahului for Maui. Many break the journey with a night or two in California.
