Apartments between the Louvre, the Tuileries and the Palais-Royal gardens, a short stroll from the Seine
As featured in
Few corners of Paris pack in quite so much history per square metre. Here the Louvre, once the palace of French kings and now the largest art museum in the world, faces the Palais-Royal across rue de Rivoli. The Tuileries garden runs west towards Place de la Concorde. Step off the main streets and you find stone arcades, old print shops, a glovemaker and some of the most correctly dressed waiters in the city.
Our collection here runs to 90+ apartments, mostly in period buildings around rue de Rivoli, rue Saint-Honoré, the Palais-Royal and the Bourse. They range from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre for a weekend of galleries to larger family apartments and the odd townhouse, and several have air conditioning, which you will be glad of in a Paris July.
Below you will find a short guide to the quarter, where to base yourself and when to come.

Built for Cardinal Richelieu in the 1630s, the Palais-Royal hides one of the calmest gardens in Paris behind its façades: clipped lime trees, a fountain, and long arcades of small shops selling vintage medals, gloves and fine stationery. In the front courtyard, Daniel Buren's black and white striped columns caused a furore in 1986 and are now a favourite place for children to clamber about.
Colette lived and died in an apartment overlooking the garden, and Le Grand Véfour has been feeding diners beneath its painted ceilings since the eighteenth century. The Comédie-Française performs at the corner, in the Salle Richelieu.

Staying a few minutes' walk away changes how you see the Louvre. You can go in for an hour rather than a whole exhausting day, and come back another morning. It closes on Tuesdays and opens late on Wednesdays and Fridays, when the galleries are noticeably calmer. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs, in the same palace, is often overlooked and always rewarding.
Beyond I. M. Pei's pyramid, the Tuileries lead to the Orangerie and Monet's Water Lilies, with a funfair in summer. Or cross the Pont des Arts and you are in Saint-Germain within ten minutes.

The eastern side of the quarter has had a new lease of life. La Samaritaine, the great Art Nouveau department store beside the Pont Neuf, reopened in 2021, as did the Bourse de Commerce, a domed former corn exchange that Tadao Ando reworked to house the Pinault Collection of contemporary art.
Nearby, E. Dehillerin on rue Coquillière has sold copper pans to professional cooks since the nineteenth century, and the market street of rue Montorgueil is a short walk north. Galerie Vivienne, a covered passage from the 1820s with a mosaic floor, makes a fine detour on a wet afternoon.

Angelina, under the arcades of rue de Rivoli, has served its famously thick hot chocolate since 1903, and the small wine bars and bistros behind rue Saint-Honoré are where the neighbourhood actually eats. Spring and early autumn are the loveliest months, with the Tuileries in leaf and pavement tables full.
On the European Heritage Days in September, the ministries and state offices inside the Palais-Royal often open their doors to the public. August is quieter, with some restaurants shut, and December brings lights along the rue de Rivoli. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, private guides for the Louvre and transfers from the Gare du Nord.
