Apartments and townhouses around the old market quarter of Paris, a short walk from the Louvre and the Seine
As featured in
From the twelfth century until 1969, Les Halles fed Paris. Zola called the great wholesale market the belly of the city. Then it moved out to Rungis, on the southern edge of town. The market has gone but the appetite never left. Rue Montorgueil, a cobbled pedestrian street running north from the church of Saint-Eustache, is still lined with fishmongers, cheese shops, bakers and busy café terraces.
Our collection here runs to 180+ apartments and townhouses across the 1st and 2nd arrondissements. They range from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre close to the market street to family apartments with up to 6 bedrooms. Some have air conditioning, a sauna or that rarest of Parisian comforts, a private parking space.
Below you will find which streets are worth staying on, the sights within a few minutes' walk and the best months to come.

At number 51 is Stohrer, which opened in 1730 and is credited as the oldest pâtisserie in Paris. Nicolas Stohrer had been pastry chef to Stanisław Leszczyński, the exiled King of Poland, and came to Versailles when the king's daughter married Louis XV. The house is credited with the baba au rhum, and the queue at the door suggests nobody has tired of it yet.
Further up are the gilded snail over L'Escargot Montorgueil and the old façade of Au Rocher de Cancale. Off to the side, Rue Tiquetonne and the glass-roofed Passage du Grand-Cerf have small boutiques and good cocktail bars. The street is lively from early morning to late evening. If you sleep lightly, choose an apartment on one of the side streets.

Saint-Eustache took roughly a century to build from 1532. It has a Gothic frame dressed in Renaissance detail, and its organ is the largest in France. Organ recitals there are among the quiet pleasures of the quarter.
Next door, the circular Bourse de Commerce was once the city's grain exchange. Since 2021 it has housed the Pinault Collection of contemporary art, with a concrete cylinder by Tadao Ando set beneath the old glass dome. The site of the market is now the Forum des Halles under its great undulating roof, the Canopée, beside the Jardin Nelson Mandela. A few streets east is the Fontaine des Innocents, carved in the sixteenth century and the finest Renaissance fountain in Paris.

Few parts of Paris are as easy to walk from. The Louvre and the gardens of the Palais-Royal are a short stroll west. To the east, across the Boulevard de Sébastopol, the Marais has its mansions, galleries and falafel queues. Head south past the Tour Saint-Jacques and you reach the Seine, the Île de la Cité and Notre-Dame, which reopened in December 2024 after the fire.
One caution for art lovers. The Centre Pompidou, on the Marais side of the boulevard, closed in September 2025 for a renovation due to finish in 2030. You can still admire its pipes and escalators from the piazza.

The old market still shapes how the quarter eats. Au Pied de Cochon, a brasserie that opened in 1947 while the porters were still working, serves onion soup to the late crowd. On Rue Coquillière, E. Dehillerin has sold copper pans and kitchen knives to cooks since 1820.
April to June and September to October are the gentlest months. The Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills every corner with bands. August is quieter, and plenty of shops close for a few weeks, Stohrer among them. December brings Christmas lights and chestnut sellers. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, timed Louvre tickets and transfers from Gare du Nord or the airports.
