Haussmann apartments between the Palais Garnier, the Madeleine and the great department stores
As featured in
This is Baron Haussmann's Paris: long avenues of cream stone, wrought-iron balconies along every floor and, at the centre, the Palais Garnier, the gilded opera house Charles Garnier finished in 1875. A short walk west stands the Madeleine, a church built to look like a Greek temple. To the north are the domes of Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, and to the south lie Place Vendôme and the Tuileries.
Our collection here runs to 130+ apartments. They range from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre near Place Vendôme to family apartments with up to 6 bedrooms, and there are a few townhouses too. Most are in classic nineteenth-century buildings. Some have balconies, and some have air conditioning, which is worth a great deal in a Paris August.
Below you will find where to base yourself, what to see and when to come.

The Palais Garnier is the grandest building of Second Empire Paris. The marble Grand Staircase was built for being seen as much as for climbing, and the auditorium ceiling was repainted by Marc Chagall in 1964, a modern burst of colour inside a gilded nineteenth-century room. Below the building is a water tank, which gave Gaston Leroux the idea for The Phantom of the Opera.
You do not need a ticket to a performance to see it. Daytime visits take in the staircase, the foyers and, when rehearsals allow, the auditorium itself. Afterwards, the Café de la Paix across the square has been serving opera-goers since 1862.

The Madeleine was first planned under Napoleon as a temple to the glory of his army. It was finally consecrated as a church in 1842, and it is still ringed by Corinthian columns. The square around it is one of the great food addresses in Paris, with Fauchon, La Maison de la Truffe and Caviar Kaspia almost side by side.
Rue Royale runs south to Place de la Concorde, and Rue Saint-Honoré, lined with fashion houses, leads east to Place Vendôme. That octagonal square has Napoleon on top of its column, the Ritz on one side and jewellers' windows all the way round. From there, the Tuileries gardens are a few minutes away on foot.

Galeries Lafayette Haussmann sits beneath a stained-glass dome from 1912. The rooftop terrace is free to visit and looks across the Opéra's green roof to the Eiffel Tower. Printemps, next door, has been trading since 1865, and between the two stores you could spend an entire wet afternoon without noticing the weather.
A few streets east are the covered passages of the 9th, such as Passage Verdeau and Passage Jouffroy, full of old booksellers and print dealers. Just north is Gare Saint-Lazare, which Monet painted. Trains still leave from it for Normandy, including Vernon for Giverny, which makes a day among the water lilies easy to arrange.

Ladurée has been on Rue Royale since 1862, and its pistachio macarons are still worth the queue. For something less formal, Bouillon Chartier on Rue du Faubourg Montmartre has served cheap, cheerful French classics in a belle époque dining room since 1896. Rue des Martyrs, up the hill, is a good street for cheese, bread and pâtisserie.
The Paris Opera season runs from September to July. From November, the department store windows and the Christmas tree under the Galeries Lafayette dome draw crowds. The sales come in January and early summer. Spring and early autumn are the most pleasant times to walk the boulevards. Our concierge can book opera and ballet tickets, restaurant tables and a personal shopper.
