Left Bank apartments between the Seine and the Luxembourg Gardens, a short stroll from the cafés of the boulevard
As featured in
Saint-Germain-des-Prés grew up around a sixth-century abbey, and its church, with a Romanesque bell tower dating from around the year 1000, is the oldest in Paris. In the last century the cafés across the square held Sartre, de Beauvoir and half the literary Left Bank. Today the cafés are still full, though the bookshops now share the streets with galleries, antique dealers and some very good pâtissiers.
Our collection here runs to 110+ apartments, from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre near Mabillon and the rue Bonaparte to large family apartments and a townhouse close to the Luxembourg Gardens. Some have air conditioning, balconies or roof terraces, which are worth having in a Paris August.
Below is a guide to the quarter, where to base yourself and when to come.

The heart of the quarter is the square in front of the church, with Les Deux Magots on one corner and the Café de Flore a few doors along. Brasserie Lipp sits opposite, still serving choucroute to a well-dressed crowd.
A short walk east, the rue de Buci and the rue de Seine are lined with cheesemongers, wine shops and terraces, and the covered Marché Saint-Germain is handy for provisions. Northwards, the streets towards the river fill with galleries and antique dealers around the École des Beaux-Arts, and the Pont des Arts crosses to the Louvre.

Odéon is the quieter, more residential side of the quarter. The Théâtre de l'Odéon opened in 1782 and still stages serious drama, and the Cour du Commerce Saint-André, a cobbled passage nearby, is home to Le Procope, which has been serving coffee since 1686.
The Jardin du Luxembourg is the great pleasure here: the Medici Fountain, chess players under the chestnut trees, and children sailing toy boats on the Grand Bassin. The palace, built for Marie de' Medici, now houses the French Senate. Our larger family apartments tend to sit on this side of the quarter.

Saint-Sulpice, the vast church on its fountain square, holds Delacroix's murals of Jacob wrestling with the angel. The painter's last apartment and studio, on the small and leafy place de Furstenberg, is now the Musée Delacroix, one of the most agreeable small museums in Paris.
The Musée d'Orsay is a short walk west along the river, and the Latin Quarter, with the Panthéon and the Sorbonne, begins just across the boulevard Saint-Michel. Our concierge can book private guides for Orsay and the Louvre, which saves a good deal of queueing.
Explore the Latin Quarter
This is a fine quarter for eating. Poilâne bakes its famous sourdough on the rue du Cherche-Midi, Pierre Hermé sells macarons on the rue Bonaparte, and Le Bon Marché, the first of the Paris department stores, has its Grande Épicerie food hall close by.
Spring and early autumn are the best times to come, when the café terraces are full and the Luxembourg is at its greenest. In August many Parisians leave and some restaurants close. On the Journées du Patrimoine in September, the Senate opens its doors. Our concierge can secure restaurant tables, arrange pastry classes and book transfers.
