White villas between the vineyards of La Geria and the marina at Puerto Calero, on Lanzarote's sunny south coast
As featured in
Tías is one of the less obvious corners of Lanzarote, and one of the best placed. The town sits on a ridge above the south coast, with black lava fields and low white houses running down to the sea. Puerto del Carmen, the island's oldest resort, falls within its boundaries, and Lanzarote's first marina, at Puerto Calero, is a few minutes along the coast.
Our Tías collection runs to 37 villas. Most are in and around Puerto Calero, with others in Mácher and the town of Tías itself. Most are low, whitewashed houses in the island style, many with private pools, and the largest has 12 bedrooms.
Here is how the area divides up, and when to come.

Puerto Calero was the vision of a local businessman, José Calero, who began the project in the 1980s. Strictly speaking it lies just over the municipal line in Yaiza, on the western edge of Puerto del Carmen. The waterfront is lined with restaurants and cafés. Local boats share the pontoons with yachts stocking up before Atlantic crossings, and a water taxi runs along the coast to Puerto del Carmen.
The villas here sit on the slopes behind the harbour, white and low in the Lanzarote manner. Evenings are quiet, which is rather the point. A short way south, the fishing hamlet of Playa Quemada has a dark pebble beach and a few simple fish restaurants.

Tías is a proper town rather than a resort, with a church square, bakeries and a weekday rhythm. The Portuguese novelist José Saramago, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1998, lived here from 1993 until his death in 2010. His home, A Casa José Saramago, is now a museum where you can see his library and study. Go in the morning, as it keeps short hours.
Mácher, a village a few kilometres inland from Puerto Calero, has open views over lava fields and down to the sea. Higher up, La Asomada and Conil are quieter still. Villas here trade a walk to the waterfront for more space and longer views.

Puerto del Carmen is the nearest place for a long day on the sand. Playa Grande stretches along the seafront, and the old harbour at the western end is the place for grilled fish at lunch. It is livelier than Puerto Calero but only a short drive away.
Inland, the wine country of La Geria is one of the odder sights in Spain. Each vine grows in a hollow dug into black volcanic ash and sheltered by a crescent of stone. Several bodegas pour the local malvasía volcánica for tastings. The fire mountains of Timanfaya National Park are around half an hour beyond.

The local table is simple and good. Expect papas arrugadas, small potatoes boiled in salted water and served with red and green mojo sauces, along with fresh fish such as vieja, local goat's cheese and a glass of crisp malvasía from La Geria.
Lanzarote is warm all year, which makes Tías a sound choice for winter sun from November to March, around four hours' flight from the UK. Summer is hot and breezy with the trade winds. Spring and autumn are ideal for walking the volcanic trails and touring the bodegas. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, boat charters from Puerto Calero, wine tastings and airport transfers.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
Puerto Calero is the choice for a marina setting with restaurants on the waterfront and quiet evenings. Mácher and the hills around Tías have more space and wide views. Puerto del Carmen is best if you want to walk to the beach. Puerto Calero technically falls within neighbouring Yaiza, but it sits on the edge of Puerto del Carmen and most people treat it as part of the same stretch of coast.
Tías is a year-round destination. November to March brings reliable winter sun, summer is hot but cooled by the trade winds, and spring and autumn are ideal for walking and visiting the vineyards of La Geria.
