Best Whiskey: Green Spot Whiskey From The Midleton Distillery
Green Spot Irish Whiskey is without doubt one of the finest whiskies available. It has a unique smooth but intense flavour that makes it stand out from the crowd. Widely considered by whisky connoisseurs to be up there with the very best and at £52 a bottle it’s pretty reasonable for such quality.
The Green Spot name originated from the Mitchell family’s practice of marking casks of different ages with a daub of coloured paint. Originally there was a ‘Blue Spot’, ‘Red Spot’ and even a ‘Yellow Spot’, but Green Spot emerged as their most popular whiskey and is one of the few “whiskey bonder brands” to survive to modern day.
Single Pot Still whiskey is unique to Ireland in general and to the Midleton Distillery, Co. Cork, in particular, and is regarded as the quintessential style of Irish whiskey. Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills, Pot Still whiskeys are characterised by full, complex flavours and a wonderful, creamy mouthfeel.
You can even still get bottles of Green Spot Château Léoville Barton which won “Best single pot still whiskey” at the 2016 World Whiskies Awards. Matured initially in a mixture of ex-Oloroso Sherry, fresh American oak and ex-bourbon barrels, Green Spot whiskey is then finished in the old Château Léoville Barton Bordeaux wine casks for 12 to 24 months. Chateau Léoville Barton is a highly-regarded grand cru Château, named after the Irish ‘Wine Geese’ winemaker Thomas Barton.
We also recommend the Yellow Spot or the Redbreast from the same distillery, both single still pot whiskies too.
