Apartments and townhouses on the east side of Paris, from the Place de la Bastille to the old wine quays of Bercy
As featured in
Everyone knows the name Bastille, but few people can picture the place. The prison was stormed in 1789 and pulled down soon after. What you find today is a great roundabout, a modern opera house and one of the liveliest corners of eastern Paris. Walk south and the streets grow calmer as they reach Gare de Lyon and Bercy, where the old wine warehouses by the river are now gardens, a film museum and a cobbled street of restaurants.
Our collection here runs to 50+ apartments. There are one-bedroom flats near the Bassin de l'Arsenal for couples, family apartments around Reuilly and Daumesnil, and lofts with rooftop views. The largest townhouses and apartments have up to 6 bedrooms.
This is a quarter for people who would rather shop at a market than in a department store. Here is how it fits together.

The fortress-prison stood on the Place de la Bastille until the crowd stormed it on 14 July 1789. Strangely, the bronze July Column in the middle of the square marks a later revolution, the one of 1830. The large glass Opéra Bastille, opened for the bicentenary in 1989, takes up one side.
To the east, the Faubourg Saint-Antoine was the city's furniture-making quarter for centuries, and its cobbled courtyards still hide workshops and studios. Rue de Lappe is the street for bars. The Bassin de l'Arsenal, a marina full of moored boats, runs south to the Seine, and Le Marais starts just across the square.

The Marché d'Aligre is the best market in this part of Paris. Fruit and vegetable stalls fill the street outside, and the covered Marché Beauvau sells cheese, meat and fish. It opens every morning except Monday, and by lunchtime the bistros and wine bars around the square are busy.
A few streets south, the Coulée verte René-Dumont runs for nearly five kilometres along an old railway viaduct. It is a planted walkway above the traffic, heading towards the Bois de Vincennes. In the arches below, the Viaduc des Arts on avenue Daumesnil is home to craftsmen, galleries and furniture restorers.

For well over a century, Bercy was the wine depot of Paris: a district of warehouses where barrels came in by river. Some of the old stone cellars survive as Bercy Village, where restaurants line the Cour Saint-Émilion and the old rails still run through the paving. The rest became the Parc de Bercy, with lawns, gardens and a small vineyard.
On the edge of the park, the Cinémathèque française has a film museum and screenings in a building by Frank Gehry. The Simone-de-Beauvoir footbridge crosses the Seine to the Bibliothèque nationale. Streets here are generally greener and quieter, and they suit families well.

Above the platforms at Gare de Lyon, Le Train Bleu is a Belle Époque dining room of gilt and painted ceilings. It is the quarter's grand lunch, and a fine send-off before a train south. For something simpler, the Marché Bastille sets up along boulevard Richard-Lenoir on Thursday and Sunday mornings.
Spring and early autumn are the best months: mild, light and lively without heavy crowds. On 13 and 14 July, fire stations across the city hold their famous firemen's balls. August is quiet, and some restaurants close for the month. Our concierge can book tables, Opéra Bastille tickets and a private chef.
