Haussmann apartments between rue des Martyrs and the foot of Montmartre, in the Paris that Parisians keep for themselves
As featured in
Parisians call it SoPi, which tells you something about how the neighbourhood sees itself these days. South Pigalle is the slice of the 9th arrondissement between the grands boulevards and the foot of Montmartre. Over the past fifteen years or so it has turned from a slightly louche district into one of the most sought-after addresses on the Right Bank, with its cocktail bars, natural wine, good bakeries and very good bread.
We have 46 apartments here, mostly in Haussmann-era buildings with tall windows and parquet floors. They range from one-bedroom flats for a weekend à deux to family apartments of up to 4 bedrooms, and a few have air conditioning, parking or views towards Sacré-Coeur and the rooftops.
What follows covers the streets worth knowing, what to see and when to come.

Rue des Martyrs climbs north from Notre-Dame-de-Lorette towards Montmartre. Its lower end is a proper Parisian food street, lined with cheesemongers, pâtissiers, fishmongers and bakers, and local shoppers still outnumber visitors on a Saturday morning.
Avenue Trudaine crosses it near the top. It is broad and tree-lined, with café terraces facing the Square d'Anvers, and it has a calm about it that surprises people who know Pigalle only by its name. The cocktail bars that made SoPi fashionable are scattered through the side streets, and most of them get going late.

The 1820s brought a wave of building to the streets around place Saint-Georges, and painters, writers and musicians moved in. The quarter was nicknamed the Nouvelle Athènes. Chopin and George Sand lived in the Square d'Orléans, and Delacroix had a studio nearby.
The Musée de la Vie Romantique on rue Chaptal occupies the house of the painter Ary Scheffer, with a garden café that is lovely in spring. A few streets away, the Musée Gustave Moreau keeps the Symbolist painter's house and studio as he left it, spiral staircase and all. Both are small and rarely crowded, so either fits easily into an afternoon.
Explore the Grands Boulevards

Boulevard de Clichy and Boulevard de Rochechouart mark the top of the neighbourhood. They still have a stretch of neon, theatres and the Moulin Rouge, which has been putting on the cancan since 1889. Cross them and you are in Montmartre, climbing past Abbesses to Sacré-Coeur and the vineyard on rue des Saules.
For the best of both, stay south of the boulevard and walk up early in the morning, before the crowds arrive at the top. Galeries Lafayette, Printemps and the Opéra Garnier are an easy walk the other way.

People in South Pigalle eat well and without much ceremony. Expect neighbourhood bistros, wine bars with small plates, and a bakery on most corners. Spring and early autumn are the best times to come, when the café terraces are full and the light is soft. Fête de la Musique on 21 June fills the streets with bands, and in October Montmartre's grape harvest festival brings parades and tastings up the hill. Our concierge can book restaurant and cabaret tables, arrange transfers from Gare du Nord or the airports, and organise guided walks through Montmartre.
