Apartments in the Latin Quarter

Eight centuries of students, books and good conversation

The Latin Quarter takes its name from the language of its medieval students, who spoke Latin in the lecture halls and the taverns alike. The Sorbonne was founded here in 1257, and the hill of Sainte-Geneviève has been the intellectual heart of Paris ever since. It is still full of bookshops, cafés and students arguing over small glasses of wine.

Our Latin Quarter collection runs to 46 apartments, from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre on quiet streets near the Panthéon to larger family apartments close to the Jardin du Luxembourg, some with terraces or air conditioning.

Here is a guide to the neighbourhood, what to see and when to come.

Neighbouring quarters

The streets around the Panthéon and the Sorbonne for the old university quarter, rue Mouffetard for markets and bistros, and the western edge near the Jardin du Luxembourg for families and a quieter stay.

The Montagne Sainte-Geneviève

Domes, chapels and the old university

The hill at the centre of the quarter is crowned by the Panthéon, built as a church in the eighteenth century and now the resting place of Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Marie Curie and Josephine Baker. Foucault first hung his pendulum here in 1851 to show the Earth turning, and a copy still swings beneath the dome.

Next door, the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont has a rare carved rood screen and the shrine of Sainte-Geneviève, patron saint of Paris. Pascal and Racine are buried inside. Apartments up here are on some of the quietest streets in central Paris, although the Sorbonne and the cafés of the boulevard Saint-Michel are only a few minutes' walk away.

Rue Mouffetard & the Jardin des Plantes

A market street and a Roman arena

Rue Mouffetard runs downhill from the little Place de la Contrescarpe, lined with cheesemongers, bakers, fishmongers and greengrocers at the bottom end and small restaurants further up. Hemingway lived around the corner on rue du Cardinal Lemoine in the early 1920s, and wrote about the neighbourhood in A Moveable Feast.

A short walk east are the Arènes de Lutèce, the remains of a Roman amphitheatre where local men now play pétanque, and the Jardin des Plantes, the botanical garden founded in the 1630s. Its Grande Galerie de l'Évolution, with a procession of stuffed animals, is very popular with children. Next door, the Grande Mosquée de Paris serves mint tea and pastries in a shaded courtyard.

Museums & the River

Unicorns, books and a view of Notre-Dame

The Musée de Cluny, the national museum of the Middle Ages, stands on the ruins of Gallo-Roman baths and holds the six Lady and the Unicorn hangings, one of the great works of medieval art. On the riverbank, Shakespeare and Company sells English books across the water from Notre-Dame, which reopened in December 2024 after the fire.

Further along the Seine, the Institut du Monde Arabe, designed by Jean Nouvel, has a roof terrace with a fine view over the rooftops. Saint-Germain-des-Prés is a short stroll west, and the Île de la Cité is just over the bridge.

Food & the Seasons

Bistros, cheese shops and a quiet August

The quarter eats well without much fuss: classic bistros, wine bars, crêperies and the food shops of rue Mouffetard, which are at their busiest on weekend mornings. A picnic of cheese, bread and fruit in the Jardin du Luxembourg is a very Left Bank lunch.

Spring and early autumn are the best times to come, with long evenings and pleasant weather for walking. In June, the Fête de la Musique on the 21st fills the streets with bands, and the Journées du Patrimoine in September open buildings that are normally closed. August is quieter, and some family-run restaurants close for the holidays. Our concierge can arrange transfers, restaurant tables, museum tickets and guided walks.
