Apartments in the Eiffel Tower

Living in the shadow of Gustave Eiffel's tower

Built for the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and meant to come down twenty years later, the Eiffel Tower now rises 330 metres over the Seine and is still the tallest structure in Paris. The streets around it are less touristy than you might think. Beyond the queues at its feet are some of the most handsome and quietly residential neighbourhoods in the city, full of Haussmann buildings, market streets and good neighbourhood bistros.

Our collection here runs to 90+ apartments, from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre for a couple to family apartments of up to 5 bedrooms. They are spread across Gros-Caillou and Avenue Rapp, Grenelle and Javel on the Left Bank, and Passy and Chaillot across the river. Several look straight at the tower, and a few come with balconies, courtyards or a garden.

Here is how the neighbourhoods differ, what lies within a short walk, and when to come.

Gros-Caillou & Rue Cler

The 7th, where Paris does its shopping

East of the Champ de Mars, the Gros-Caillou quarter feels more like a well-heeled village than a postcard. Rue Cler is a pedestrian market street of cheesemongers, bakers and café terraces, and Rue Saint-Dominique has good bistros and small shops. On Avenue Rapp, look up at number 29, Jules Lavirotte's Art Nouveau façade of 1901, which is as flamboyant as Paris architecture gets.

The museums are close by. The Musée du Quai Branly, designed by Jean Nouvel, sits behind its living wall of plants beside the river, and Napoleon lies beneath the gilded dome of Les Invalides. The Musée Rodin, with The Thinker in its rose garden, is a short stroll further on.

Grenelle & Javel

The Left Bank, downriver

South-west of the tower, in the 15th arrondissement, Grenelle and Javel are calmer, more residential and popular with families. The double-decker Pont de Bir-Hakeim, with the Métro rattling over the top, gives one of the best views of the tower. Marlon Brando walked beneath it in Last Tango in Paris.

Below the bridge, the Allée des Cygnes runs down a narrow island in the Seine to a small replica of the Statue of Liberty. Further on, the Parc André Citroën, laid out on the site of the old car factory, has lawns, glasshouses and fountains for children to run through on hot days.

Passy, Chaillot & Trocadéro

The view from across the water

Over the Pont d'Iéna, the 16th arrondissement rises up the hill to the Palais de Chaillot, built for the exhibition of 1937. Its terrace at Trocadéro is where everyone takes the photograph. The palace also houses the Musée de l'Homme and the Cité de l'Architecture, and the Musée d'Art Moderne and the Palais de Tokyo stand a few minutes along Avenue du Président Wilson.

Passy, further up, is elegant and unhurried. It has its own shopping street on Rue de Passy and Balzac's house, now a small museum, where he hid from his creditors.

Food & the Seasons

Cheese, fireworks and a September stroll

The best meals here are often assembled rather than ordered: a baguette, a wedge of Comté and a bottle from Rue Cler, eaten on the Champ de Mars as the tower sparkles. The Saxe-Breteuil market, with the tower at the end of the avenue, is worth a morning.

Spring and early autumn are the loveliest times to come. On 14 July, Bastille Day, fireworks are launched from the tower, and the crowds are enormous. August is quieter, as many Parisians leave town. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, timed tickets for the tower, private museum guides and a dinner cruise on the Seine.

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.
