Where the Left Bank came to paint, drink and argue

A century ago, cheap studios and late cafés drew Picasso, Modigliani, Hemingway and a great many other painters and poets to Montparnasse. Le Dôme, La Rotonde, Le Select and La Coupole still trade on the boulevard du Montparnasse. The quarter around them, mostly in the 14th arrondissement, has since become one of the most comfortable places to live in Paris. It has market streets, theatres and a cemetery full of writers, and twenty metres below Place Denfert-Rochereau lie the Catacombs.

Our collection here runs to 42 apartments and townhouses. They range from one-bedroom flats near rue Daguerre to family apartments around Vavin and Raspail and larger homes in Plaisance with up to 5 bedrooms. A few have balconies or a roof terrace, and several have air conditioning for a Paris August.

Here is how the neighbourhood divides, what to see and when to come.

Vavin & the Boulevard

The cafés that made the legend

At the Vavin crossroads, the legend of Montparnasse still sits down to eat. La Coupole opened in 1927 and keeps its Art Deco dining room of painted pillars. Le Dôme, now a serious fish restaurant, Le Select and La Rotonde are all within a few doors. At the Port-Royal end of the boulevard, La Closerie des Lilas is where Hemingway liked to write.

Apartments around Vavin and boulevard Raspail are a short walk up rue Vavin from the Jardin du Luxembourg, with Saint-Germain only a little further. The Musée Zadkine, the sculptor's house and garden on rue d'Assas, is one of the quietest museums in Paris.

Daguerre & Denfert

Market streets and the empire of the dead

Rue Daguerre, pedestrian for much of its length, is the neighbourhood's larder, with cheesemongers, fishmongers, bakers and café terraces that fill up on a Sunday morning. Agnès Varda lived on the street for more than half a century and filmed its shopkeepers in Daguerréotypes in the mid-1970s.

At its eastern end, on Place Denfert-Rochereau beneath Bartholdi's Lion of Belfort, a small pavilion leads 131 steps down into the Catacombs. The route runs for about 1.5 kilometres through old limestone quarries lined with the bones of more than six million Parisians, and it stays at around 14°C all year. Tickets are timed, so book ahead and bring a jumper.

Cemetery, Theatres & Plaisance

Writers' graves and a night at the theatre

Montparnasse Cemetery is a calm place to spend an hour under the trees. Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir share a grave close to the main gate. Baudelaire and Samuel Beckett are buried here too, and so is Serge Gainsbourg, whose headstone collects Métro tickets and cabbages left by admirers.

Rue de la Gaîté has been a street of theatres and music halls since the nineteenth century, Bobino among them. The observation deck of the Tour Montparnasse, 210 metres of 1973 glass and steel, closed in March 2026 for a renovation expected to take several years. Parisians will have to find another setting for their old joke that the best view of Paris is the one without the tower in it. South of the station, Plaisance is quieter, with village streets and the iron-framed church of Notre-Dame-du-Travail.

Food & the Seasons

Galettes, oysters and a Left Bank calendar

The crêperies of rue du Montparnasse go back to the Bretons who arrived at the Gare Montparnasse and stayed, and a galette with a bowl of cider is still the local lunch. The Edgar Quinet market sets up under the trees on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. On Sundays the same boulevard becomes an open-air art market.

Spring and early autumn are the best seasons for walking the Left Bank. August is quieter, as Parisians head south and some shops close, and in winter the brasseries fill up for oysters. Our concierge can book Catacombs tickets or a guided tour, a table at La Coupole, a nanny for an evening out and transfers from the station or airport.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to stay in Montparnasse?

Vavin and boulevard Raspail suit those who want the historic cafés and the Jardin du Luxembourg close by. Rue Daguerre and Denfert-Rochereau suit those who want market streets, the Catacombs and the RER on the doorstep. Plaisance is quieter and often has more space for families.

When is the best time to visit Montparnasse?

April to June and September to October are the most pleasant months for walking and café terraces. August is quieter, with some shops closed while Parisians are away. Winter is good for museums, theatre and oysters in the brasseries.

How long does a visit to the Catacombs take, and is it suitable for children?

Allow about an hour for the route of roughly 1.5 kilometres. There are 131 steps down, 112 back up and no lift. Under-14s must be with an adult, and some children find the bones unsettling. The exit is on avenue René-Coty, a short walk from the entrance.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in Montparnasse & Catacombs?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in Montparnasse & Catacombs cost?

Across our 42 properties in Montparnasse & Catacombs, weekly rates typically range from £2,900 to £6,000, with the most affordable from around £2,300 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Montparnasse from London?

The Eurostar arrives at Gare du Nord, and from there the RER B runs direct to Port-Royal and Denfert-Rochereau. The same line serves Charles de Gaulle airport. From Orly, the Orlyval shuttle connects with the RER B at Antony. Our concierge can arrange private transfers.

Are there apartments in Montparnasse & Catacombs for large groups?

Yes. Our Montparnasse & Catacombs collection includes properties with up to 5 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
