Haussmann apartments facing the Eiffel Tower, in the calm, elegant streets of the 16th arrondissement
As featured in
Trocadéro is where Paris comes to look at the Eiffel Tower. From the terrace of the Palais de Chaillot, built for the 1937 Exposition, the gardens run down to the Seine and the tower stands directly opposite, close enough to give you a real sense of its size. Behind that famous view is one of the calmest and most handsome parts of the city: the 16th arrondissement, with its cream stone, wrought-iron balconies and wide, tree-lined avenues.
Our collection here runs to 49 apartments, from one-bedroom pieds-à-terre off Avenue Kléber to large Haussmann family apartments in Passy and around Avenue Foch, the largest with 7 bedrooms. Many have balconies, and a lucky few look straight at the tower.
What follows covers the streets worth knowing, the museums close by and how the seasons change the place.

The square takes its name, rather unexpectedly, from a fort near Cádiz, captured by French troops in 1823. Today it belongs to the Palais de Chaillot, whose two curved wings frame the tower across the river. In 1948 the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights here, and the terrace between the wings is still called the Parvis des Droits de l'Homme.
Below, the Jardins du Trocadéro step down past the Warsaw fountains to the Pont d'Iéna. Go early in the morning, before the photographers arrive, and you will have the view almost to yourself.

Few parts of Paris have so many museums within such a short walk. The Palais de Chaillot itself houses the Musée de l'Homme and the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine. On the Place d'Iéna, the Musée Guimet has one of the finest collections of Asian art in Europe.
Along Avenue du Président Wilson, the Palais Galliera is the city's fashion museum, and the Palais de Tokyo and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris share a single building facing the Seine. You could spend a week here without going near the Louvre queues.

Passy was a separate village until the middle of the nineteenth century, and Rue de Passy still has the feel of a local high street, with bakers, cheesemongers and good shopping. Balzac's house, where he wrote much of La Comédie Humaine, is open to visitors, and Manet and Debussy are buried in the small cemetery of Passy just off the Place du Trocadéro.
A little further west, the Musée Marmottan Monet holds Monet's Impression, Sunrise. Beyond it is the Bois de Boulogne, with the Fondation Louis Vuitton and, in late May and early June, the French Open at Roland-Garros.

On Wednesday and Saturday mornings the Marché du Président Wilson sets up along the avenue, one of the best markets in the city for produce, oysters and cheese. In the evening, come back to the terrace after dark, when the tower sparkles for a few minutes on the hour.
Spring and early autumn are the loveliest times to come. In August many Parisians leave and some restaurants close, though the streets are pleasantly quiet. December brings lights and short, bright days. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, museum tickets, a dinner cruise on the Seine and airport transfers.

The terrace of the Palais de Chaillot, on the Place du Trocadéro, is the classic view, looking straight across the gardens and the Seine to the tower. It is quietest early in the morning, and after dark you can watch the tower sparkle on the hour.
