A duke's garden, a market street and the quieter side of the Right Bank

Monceau and Ternes sit side by side across the 8th and 17th arrondissements, just north of the Arc de Triomphe. This is residential Paris at its most composed: wide avenues of cream stone, private mansions on the edge of a park, and a market street where the cheesemonger knows his regulars by name. In 1860 the City of Paris bought the old ducal estate here and sold half of it to the financiers Émile and Isaac Pereire. The hôtels particuliers they built along avenue Vélasquez and rue Murillo still set the tone today.

Our collection here runs to 37 apartments. They range from one-bedroom flats with a proper desk for working away from home to family apartments of up to 5 bedrooms, with the odd townhouse among them. Several have a terrace or a private garden, which is rarer in Paris than you might think.

Here is how the neighbourhood works, what to see and when to come.

Parc Monceau

A prince's folly, tidied up by Haussmann

The park started out as a pleasure garden for the Duke of Chartres, cousin of Louis XVI. In the 1770s the painter Carmontelle filled it with follies: a pyramid, a pagoda, a Dutch windmill and a Roman temple. A few still stand. The best is the Naumachia, an oval pond with a curve of Corinthian columns that were deliberately left looking like ruins.

By the boulevard de Courcelles gate is the domed rotunda that Claude Nicolas Ledoux designed as a tollhouse on the Farmers-General wall in 1787. Adolphe Alphand redesigned the park in 1861, adding the gilded gates. Claude Monet painted it more than once in the 1870s. On a weekday morning you'll find nannies, joggers and very little else.

Museums on the Doorstep

Porcelain, Buddhas and a forgotten painter

Three small museums sit within a few streets of the park, and none of them comes with a queue like the Louvre's. The Musée Nissim de Camondo, on rue de Monceau, is a mansion kept exactly as its owner furnished it, full of eighteenth-century French furniture, silver and Sèvres porcelain. It's a moving memorial too: the house is named after his son, who was killed in the First World War.

The Musée Cernuschi, at the park gates on avenue Vélasquez, houses a fine collection of Asian art, including a vast bronze Buddha. A short walk north on avenue de Villiers, the Musée Jean-Jacques Henner shows a nineteenth-century painter's work in a restored artist's house. For music, the Salle Pleyel is on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

Ternes & the Markets

Shopping like a resident

Place des Ternes is the busy hub of the area, with flower stalls, brasserie terraces and a line 2 métro station in the middle. Just off avenue des Ternes, rue Poncelet has been a market street since the nineteenth century. Its fruit stalls spill onto the pavement, and between them you'll find fishmongers, butchers who make their own charcuterie, cheese shops and pâtisseries. On the other side of the park, the rue de Lévis near Villiers does much the same thing.

The Arc de Triomphe is around ten minutes' walk from rue Poncelet. That means the Champs-Élysées is close when you want it, and easy to leave behind when you don't.

Food & the Seasons

Brasseries, cheese boards and the park in blossom

Most holidays here revolve around the table. You might shop rue Poncelet in the morning for a Comté, a tarte aux fraises and a bottle from the caviste, then book dinner at one of the classic brasseries on Place des Ternes.

Spring is the loveliest time to come, when the chestnuts and magnolias in Parc Monceau come into flower. June brings long evenings and the Fête de la Musique on the 21st. In August many Parisians go away and some small shops close, so the streets are quieter. September and October are mild and busy with exhibitions, and in December the avenues are lit for Christmas. Our concierge can arrange restaurant tables, museum tickets, a private guide and transfers.
