A village on a hill that Paris absorbed in 1860

Montmartre stands on a hill of around 130 metres, the highest natural point in Paris, and for most of its history it was not Paris at all. It was a village of windmills, vines and gypsum quarries until the city annexed it in 1860. Cheap rents then drew painters and cabaret singers up its staircases: Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and, later, Picasso. The white basilica of Sacré-Coeur, completed in 1914, sits on the summit.

We have 34 places to stay on and around the Butte, mostly apartments with a few townhouses among them. They range from one-bedroom flats on quiet lanes near Rue des Saules to family apartments around Abbesses and Clignancourt. Several have terraces, courtyards or a view of the basilica.

What follows covers the streets worth staying on, the art, the wine and when to come.

Neighbouring quarters of Paris

Abbesses for cafés, shops and the metro, Rue Lepic and Rue des Saules for the old village at the top, Lamarck and Clignancourt for the quieter north side, and South Pigalle for restaurants and bars at the foot of the hill.

Abbesses, Rue Lepic and the village at the top

Place des Abbesses is the everyday heart of the hill, with its Art Nouveau metro entrance by Hector Guimard and, in the little Square Jehan-Rictus, the tiled Mur des Je t'aime, where 'I love you' is written in hundreds of languages. The surrounding streets are full of bakeries, wine bars and small boutiques.

Rue Lepic winds uphill past the Café des Deux Moulins, made famous by Amélie, and the house where Van Gogh lived with his brother Theo, before reaching the old windmills of the Moulin de la Galette. Higher still, Rue des Saules runs down past the vineyard and the Lapin Agile cabaret. Arrive early in the day and you will find this side of Montmartre almost empty.

Artists' Montmartre

Where Picasso, Renoir and Valadon worked

On Place Émile-Goudeau stands the Bateau-Lavoir, a ramshackle studio building where Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon in 1907. It burned down in 1970 and was rebuilt, and studios are still let to artists. A few minutes away on Rue Cortot, the Musée de Montmartre occupies the house where Renoir once had a studio and where Suzanne Valadon later lived with her son, Maurice Utrillo. Its gardens look out over the vineyard.

Place du Tertre, close to the basilica, still has its painters at their easels, although it is busy in summer. The Montmartre cemetery, below the hill, is a quieter pilgrimage. Degas, Stendhal and Dalida are buried there.

Down the Hill

Pigalle, Rue des Martyrs and the Moulin Rouge

The Moulin Rouge opened on Boulevard de Clichy in 1889, and its red sails still turn at the foot of the hill. South of the boulevard, the neighbourhood the Parisians call SoPi has become one of the best places in the city for cocktail bars and small, serious restaurants.

Rue des Martyrs runs down from Montmartre through the ninth arrondissement and is lined with cheesemongers, pâtissiers, greengrocers and fishmongers. It is the street to walk on a Saturday morning for a picnic or a market supper at the apartment. Gare du Nord is close by, which makes this corner of Paris unusually easy for anyone arriving on the Eurostar.

Wine, Food & the Seasons

A city vineyard, a harvest party and early mornings

The Clos Montmartre on Rue des Saules is one of the last working vineyards in Paris. Every October since 1934 its harvest has been celebrated with the Fête des Vendanges, five days of concerts, a grand parade and a tasting trail of producers from across France set up around Sacré-Coeur. It is huge fun and very crowded.

Spring and early autumn are the best times to stay. Summer brings crowds to the summit, so climb the steps at dawn, when you will have the view largely to yourself. In winter the hill is quieter and its bistros are at their cosiest. Our concierge can book restaurant tables, the Moulin Rouge and guided walks.

A concierge who knows the territory

Restaurant tables in Abbesses and South Pigalle, Moulin Rouge reservations, guided walks of artists' Montmartre, vineyard visits during the Fête des Vendanges, private chefs, babysitters and transfers from Gare du Nord or the airports. Our concierge team arranges all of it, leaving you free to decide which terrace to sit on.

A house for every kind of party

Couples, families with small children, three generations together or a crowd of friends celebrating a birthday: we match the house to the group, down to the number of bathrooms and whether the pool is fenced.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to stay in Montmartre?

Abbesses is the liveliest and best connected, with cafés, shops and its own metro station. Rue Lepic and Rue des Saules are closest to the old village and the vineyard, and Lamarck and Clignancourt on the north side of the hill are quieter and more residential.

When is the best time to visit Montmartre?

April to June and September to October bring mild weather and fewer crowds than high summer. The Fête des Vendanges, the grape harvest festival, takes place over five days in the second week of October.

Is there an easy way up to Sacré-Coeur?

Yes. The Montmartre funicular runs from Place Saint-Pierre almost to the steps of the basilica, and a standard metro ticket covers it. The alternative is a climb of a couple of hundred steps through the gardens below the basilica, and climbing the dome itself takes around 300 more.

Can you arrange a private chef at a apartment in Montmartre?

Yes. Our concierge can arrange a private chef for a single dinner or your whole stay, along with cookery lessons, guided visits, transfers and restaurant reservations.

How much does a luxury propertie in Montmartre Sacré-Coeur cost?

Across our 34 properties in Montmartre Sacré-Coeur, weekly rates typically range from £2,600 to £4,100, with the most affordable from around £2,200 a week and the largest estates well above. Prices depend on the size of the property, its location and the season, with July and August the most expensive. These are guide prices based on current listings; each property page shows its own rates for your dates.

How do I get to Montmartre from London?

The Eurostar from St Pancras reaches Gare du Nord in around two and a quarter hours, and Montmartre is a short taxi ride from the station. From Charles de Gaulle airport the drive usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. Our concierge can arrange private transfers.

Are there apartments in Montmartre for large groups?

Yes. Our Montmartre collection includes properties with up to 5 bedrooms. Tell us the size of your party and the occasion, and we will send a shortlist that suits it.
